Gillig Corporation started building school buses in 1932, after years of building truck bodies and boats. Gillig first started building conventionals, and in the late 1940s transit style models began to be built. In the late 50s Gillig built the first rear-engine diesel school bus. Not long after that, the rear engine diesel transit style school bus became an Industry leader. In 1974, Gillig built their last conventional model, replaced by an all-transit lineup. In 1982 Gillig ceased the classic design. In 1985, the Phantom school bus was introduced, and in 1993, Gillig built their last school bus. Today, they're the nation's 2nd largest transit bus builder. |
