Crown Coach Corp. began operation in 1904 as a carriage builder. In 1932, Crown built the first transit style school bus in America. Crown has been known for many innovations in school bus construction, like drywall construction, and the famous "Panic Safety Door." The Panic Safety Door was the main entrance/exit door on a Crown, and it was a one-fold door with an emergency release in the bus's stepwell. Crown is well known for its "Aero" style bodies. Crown built a short lived "Super Coach II" in the late eighties, and built their last school bus in March of 1991, when they went out of business. Later, Carpenter Industries would use the Crown name, a move that proved to be very controversial.
