Treatment

A successful treatment program for childhood obesity will include goals that support normal growth and development for the child.

A Sample Treatment Program Should Include:

A Reasonable Weight Loss Goal
  • A rate of 1- 4 pounds a month: will not interfere with normal growth and development.
Dietary Management
  • Eating predetermined portions, not buffet style at family meals
  • No food should be restricted, portion control should be the focus
Physical Activity
  • Start slow with child�s current fitness level and work towards a goal of 20-30 minutes per day outside of school activities
Behavior Modification
  • Use non-food items for rewards
  • Use alternate methods to deal with stimulus that can cause overeating.
  • Provide alternate leisure time activities that include physical activity
Family Involvement
  • Parents who model healthy eating and an active lifestyle
  • Parental education in nutrition
