KIDS
ADHD and Self-esteem

Children who have ADHD experience an increased chance for developing low self-esteem. Due to the trouble they are always getting into they begin to feel bad about themselves and feel as though they are doing something bad on purpose. This is why it is important to not only discipline children with ADHD but, give them praise when they do things right. As any child they need positive re-enforcement. In relation to self-esteem children with ADHD do not have a lot of friends, many studies have shown that they have difficulty making friends and maintaining friendships. Children with ADHD have been repeatedly found to experience extremely high rates of peer rejection--presumably as a result of their intrusive and disruptive behaviors, limited understanding of the impact of their behavior on others (Balcham & Hinshaw, 2002, pp. 31). Making friends is a hard thing to teach a child, it is really something they have to learn on their own all you can do is support, encourage, and help them through their hardships.
