ADHD and Family

The problems that children face at home are mostly that they disrupt routine and are constantly getting into trouble. When there are other siblings in the picture it is especially hard, the one child is getting all of the attention and the other may resent that. This is difficult for parents and can become a very stressful situation. ADHD children are constantly on the go and seemingly have a never-ending bank of energy. In a lot of cases these children are finding themselves constantly in trouble and this begins to affect their self-esteem. They begin to feel bad about themselves and are unable to understand why they are constantly getting into trouble. Wolraich (2003) states that parents must establish rules and be very concise in their instructions; they should also encourage and reward positive behavior. This should work in accordance with punishment for inappropriate behavior. The key is to be very clear and consistent with the child from the beginning. This may be hard to remain consistent when home is no the only area in a childs life, it is important for the parents to keep in contact with the school and coordinate techniques with the teachers.
