SATISFACTION

45rpm Single

SIDE A - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction

SIDE B - Loser = Weed

HISTORICAL CONTEXT*

Rock journalists (particularly British ones, for whatever reason) often say that this single was one of Punk's immediate fathers. It was released in September, 1976, as a promo for Third Reich 'N' Roll. Not initially a success (only 200 copies were printed), "Satisfaction" (the A-side of course being a cover of the Rolling Stones song) was a big hit—by Residents' standards—when it was re-released in 1978. Unfortunately the re-release came against the Residents' wishes, and began a series of management conflicts that ultimately ended with teh band absconding to England with the Eskimo tapes.

"Satisfaction" also represents the Residents' first published collaboration with Philip "Snakefinger" Lithman, who plays lead guitar on the single.

REVIEW

RATING: 8

Oh, yes, indeed, this is punk. It's ugly, stinging, and vitriolic—more so than any other recording save perhaps "God Save the Queen" by the Sex Pistols. Of course, the Residents sacrifice melody and decipherable lyric for fury and nastiness, but brother, does it work wonders! This "Satisfaction" may not outswagger the original, but it sure as Hell out-attitudes it.

The inconsequential B-side, "Loser=Weed" consists entirely of (as far as I can tell) a keyboard and, "And feeling like/ andfeelinglikeandfeelinglikeandfeelinglike/ ...a weed. A weed. A weed." The power is in the A-side.
