1) Class Selection Week” to determine which classes students want to take for the semester. a. Attend those classes that you wish to take for the semester. This is an opportunity to “sample” different classes. b. Have Lecturer sign CSW Registration Form., c. If more students attend a particular class that the capacity designated for that class, then a priority for registration may be established. d. Attending the class before 15 May is NOT a GUARANTEE that you will have a seat in that class, however if you do not attend the class before 15 May you most likely will NOT receive a seat in that class.
2) REGISTRATION FOR “CLASS SELECTION WEEK” will occur during the first class of the first subject that you attend. The lecturer will give you a “Class Selection Week” Registration Form. Every time you go to any class in any subject during Class Selection Week, the lecturer must sign on the form next to the name of the class. YOU MUST BRING THAT FORM IN ORDER TO OFFICIALLY REGISTER FOR CLASSES. 3) REGISTRATION PRIORITY: Registration will be on a priority basis established by the number of credit hours earned. 4) REGISTRATION PROCEDURE: After Official Registration the Form MUST be turned in at the Registration Desk in the Registration Hall. After 12 Noon, Wednesday, 15 May, that particular form will NOT be ACCEPTED. 5) Fees MUST be PAID by Friday, 17 May. Students WILL NOT be allowed to enter classes on Monday, 20 May 2002 without showing a paid receipt. NO EXCEPTIONS. OUTSTATION AND INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS PLEASE ANTICIPATE YOUR FINANCIAL NEEDS IN ADVANCE! 6) Any students who want to register after Wednesday, 15 May 2002, FOR ANY REASON, will only be allowed to do so if space is available and they MUST PAY RM200 LATE REGISTRATION FEE NO EXCEPTIONS.
7) Withdrawing from the WMU Program: If you drop the WMU Program by the third day after the commencement of instruction you will be refunded 75% of fees paid for the term. If you drop from the fourth through the sixth day after the commencement of instruction you will be refunded 50% of tuition fees paid for the term. If you withdraw from the program beyond the sixth day after the commencement of instruction of the term or semester, you will not be eligible for a refund of tuition fees paid for such term or semester.
8) Repeating Subjects: Students may repeat a subject (not more than twice) in order to earn a required grade. Repeating includes any time a class is dropped after the first week. The most recent grade earned replaces your earlier grade and your CGPA counts each subject only once using the most recent grade. If a subject cannot be passed with the desired grade the third time, you may not enroll for it again.
Class Selection Advisory
English Classes: Western Michigan University requires a TOEFL score of 550 or higher ( 213 on Computer Exam) or IELTS score of 7.0 or better for guaranteed transfer to WMU. Students may take ENG 160 (Standard American English – 4 cr. hrs.) and ENGL105 (Thought & Writing – 4 cr. hrs.) with a grade of “C”/“CR” or higher as a substitute for TOEFL.
Who Should Take ENG 160? All students are required to take ENG 160 in their first term, unless specifically exempted by the Resident Director. ENG 160 uses grades of “Credit”/“No Credit”. This means results do not affect your GPA/CGPA. Grades of A, B, and C translate to “Credit”. Grades of D and E translate to “No Credit”. You must repeat ENG 160 the following semester until you receive a result of “Credit” for the class.
The Resident Director authorizes exemption from ENG 160 at his discretion. Exemption depends on the student's results from some Pre-University English papers, English 1119, "O" Level English and "A" Level English. Students given exemption from Engl 160 will not receive credit points for the course.
Some students may be recommended to an Intensive English Class (non-credit) with the Language Department in addition to ENG 160. Success in studies is related to fluency in English; the better your English, the more likely you will receive higher grades.
Students who have taken ENGL105 may not enroll in ENG 160 subsequently. Students who have not received “Credit” for ENG 160, or received an exemption from it, will not enroll in ENGL105.
Who Should Take ENGL105? All students who have passed ENG 160 should take ENGL105 in the semester immediately following. All students exempted from ENG 160 should take ENGL105 in their first or second semester. A grade of “C” or higher fulfills the Western Michigan University TOEFL requirement and the University’s General Education and Liberal Education Curriculum Proficiency Requirements.
Mathematics & Physics Classes for Pre-Engineering, Pre-Computer Science, and Pre-Natural Sciences Students: Students following these tracks must take mathematics and physics classes in the correct order and receive at least a “C” grade for each before enrolling for the next subject. If a subject is “prerequisite” to the one you want to register for, this means that you must have already completed the class with at least a “C” grade to enrol in it. If a subject is “corequisite”, you must enroll in it so that you take both in the same semester. Unless exempted by the Resident Director, students will register for mathematics classes in the following order:
• MATH118 Precalculus Mathematics* • MATH122 Calculus I • MATH123 Calculus II • MATH272 Vector & Multivariate Calculus (Pre-Engineering Students Only)
* No exemption from MATH118 is given without substantial reason. Exemptions will occur for students when: • An equivalent university-level math class has been taken for credit and approved by WMU credit evaluators in Michigan; • STPM, ‘A’ Levels or other matriculation course has been passed by examination with atleast a pass in math; • Passing Math 118 Placement Exam (during first Math 118 Class).
Students must take Physics courses in proper order with at least a “C” grade both in physics classes and prerequisite and co-requisite classes as listed below. Students who earned at least “C” grades in laboratory sections (PHYS206/208) who did not earn at least a “C” grade in PHYS205/207 should not enroll for the laboratory courses again.
• PHYS205/6 Mechanics & Heat (with Laboratory) Prerequisite: MATH122 or advanced credit with specific exemption from Math 122 Co-requisite: MATH123 (previous or concurrent enrollment) • PHYS207/8 Electricity & Light (with Laboratory) Prerequisite: PHYS205/6 and MATH123
Mathematics Classes for Pre-Business Students: Students who received SPM Math results of C6 or pass grade should take MATH110 before enrolling in MATH116. MATH116 must be taken before MATH216, unless specific exemption is given by the Resident Director.
Mathematics Classes for Other Students: Students who plan to major in fields other than engineering, business, or the sciences must take one mathematics class above Math110 to graduate. Math 114 is now available to Communications majors. NOTE: Do not enroll in lower numbered mathematics classes (e.g., MATH 110 or MATH 114) if you have already taken more advanced mathematics classes, including MATH 116, MATH 118, etc. Academic credit will not be given.
