SUNWAY COLLEGE FACULTY TEACHING IN THE WESTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY “TWINNING PROGRAM" AT SUNWAY COLLEGE PROFESSOR RICHARD PIPPEN, RESIDENT DIRECTOR Professor Pippen earned his Bachelors Degree (1957) in Secondary Education (majoring in Botany) at Eastern Illinois University, his Master's (1959) and Ph. D. (1963) degrees in Botany from The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He joined the faculty of the Department of Biological Sciences at Western Michigan University, in Kalamazoo, in 1963. He was promoted to the rank of Professor in 1978. From 1975 – 1991 he was the Chairman of the Department of Biological Sciences. In the 37 years he has been with Western Michigan University Professor Pippen has taught a number of plant related courses including travel study courses in tropical biology in Central America and Puerto Rico. Dr. Pippen was the recipient of the Western Michigan University Alumni Teaching Excellence Award in 1970 and again in 1982 (the first faculty member to receive this award twice). With research interests in plant systematics (classification), life history and reproductive biology of plants, and vegetation studies of wetlands, Prof. Pippen has over 21 publications in professional journals. Prof. Pippen was invited by Western Michigan University’s Office of International Affairs to become the Resident Director of the Western Michigan University-Sunway College Twinning Program in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He served in this position from June 1992 thru July 1995. In September 1995 Professor Pippen returned to the ranks of a teaching professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Western Michigan University. In May 1997 Prof. Pippen began a joint appointment with the Department of Biological Sciences and the Office of International Affairs as Twinning Program Administrative Officer. In August 1997 Prof. Pippen returned to Malaysia for a second time as the Resident Director of the Western Michigan University Program at Sunway College. He is currently still serving in that role. When in Michigan Dr. Pippen was active in The Michigan Botanical Club, The Nature Conservancy and the Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy and served on the Board of Directors of all three. In Malaysia Prof. Pippen enjoys the tropical climate and plants, the food, traveling, and learning more about other cultures. He also likes wildflower photography and working with computers. He is married to Sally Pippen, has one son, Jeffrey, and a granddaughter, Erica. MR.
PURUSH (PURUSOTHAMAN KARUPPIAH) Mr. Purush joined Sunway College in 1987 and has worked in the Western Michigan University Program since it started in 1987. Mr. Purush is the Academic Coordinator of the Western Michigan University Program.. He also teaches ENGL 105 Thought and Writing and ENGL 110 Literary Interpretation as well as ASC 330 Bahasa Malaysia for WMU Study Abroad students. He received his Bachelor's degree from the University of Madras in India, and his Masters from the University of Waikato in New Zealand. Back to the top Mr. Cheah joined Sunway College in 1989. In the Western Michigan University Program he teaches Mathematics courses: MATH 118 Precalculus, 122 Calculus I, 123 Calculus II, 272 (Vectors and Multivariate Calculus). He received his Bachelor of Science in Education (Hons) (1986) and Master of Science degree in Mathematics (1988) from Universiti Sains Malaysia in Penang.Back to the top Ms.
Jenifah joined Sunway College and the Western Michigan University Program
in September 2000. Ms. Jenifah
teaches ENGL 160 Standard American English and ENGL 105.Thought and Writing. Ms. Jenifah studied her first two years
in the American Associates Degree Program in Kuantan (a twinning program
with Indiana State University) before moving to Drake University in Des
Moines, Iowa, where she earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees. Her undergraduate majors were in English
and Geography; her Masters Degree in TESL (Teaching of English as a Second
Language). Before joining
Sunway College Jenifah taught in a government college in Terengganu, Malaysia
for three years and then in Kuwait University for six years.Back
to the top Ms. Gill joined Sunway College and the Western Michigan University Program in 1988. She teaches ECON 201 Principles of Microeconomics and 202 Principles of Macroeconomics, MECON 203 Malaysian Economics and SOC 334, Pacific Rim-Asian Societies. She received a Bachelors of Science, Business Administration in 1985 and a Masters of Science in Industrial and Labor Relations 1986, both at West Virginia University in the United States.Back to the top Mr. Felix joined Sunway College and the Western Michigan University Program in January, 2000. Mr. Mark teaches COM 104 Public Speaking, COM 170 Interpersonal Communication, COM 200 Introduction to Communication Theory, and COM 240 Introduction to Telecommunication. He has also been teaching HIST 301 Modern Arts and Ideas and PSCI 105 Critical Thinking About Politics. Mr. Mark was a Sunway College and Western Michigan University student. Mr. Mark earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Organizational Communication at Western Michigan University. Before joining Sunway College, Mr. Mark was Communications Manager at the Rasa Sayang Hotel in Penang.Back to the top Ms. Ratna Malar joined Sunway College and the Western Michigan University Program in January, 2000. She teaches ENGL 105 Thought and Writing and ENGL: 210 Film Interpretation.. Ms. Ratna received her Bachelor’s Degree in English from The University of Mississippi and a Master’s in Creative Writing from the same university. Before joining Sunway College, Ms. Ratna taught in another private college in Malaysia.Back to the top Mr. Siva joined Sunway College and the Western Michigan University Program in 1996,. He teaches ACTY 210 Principles of Accounting I, 211 Principles of Accounting II, BUS 175 Business Enterprise, MGMT 250 Organizational Behavior, and MATH 114 Excursions in Mathematics. He studied business management in Malaysia with ICSA, an external U.K. professional body. He has been teaching for 11 years in the field of business and accounting and is familiar with both the Malaysian and the American systems of accounting. Mr. Siva earned a Masters of Business Administration from Phoenix International University. He is a registered member of the New Zealand Institute of Management. He is quite active in conducting seminars and workshops on basic accounting principles and financial accounting for students and corporate divisions. Besides teaching, Mr. Siva is currently consulting with private companies on financial matters. He will soon enter a Ph. D. program in business. Before coming to Sunway College, Mr. Siva was with several other private institutions in Malaysia.Back to the top Ms. Tan joined the Western Michigan University Program at Sunway College full time in January 1999. She teaches CHEM 110/111 General Chemistry I with lab, CHEM 112/113 General Chemistry II with lab, and CHEM 190/191 Chemistry and Society with lab as well as GEOG 100 World Ecological Problems and Man. Ms Tan taught Chemistry in the A-Level program at Sunway College for several years and during 1996 – 1998 taught Chemistry both for A Levels and WMU. To date she has a total of 26 years of teaching Chemistry at various levels. She does some innovative projects with the students in the Chemistry classes. She is active in faculty activities and in 1997 - 98 is president of SASA the teacher's association. Ms. Tan’s daughter graduated from Western Michigan University (1997-99) and her son, Jon, is presently a student at Western Michigan University studying Computer Engineering. Ms. Tan is currently pursuing a Masters Degree at Universiti Malaya.Back to the top Ms. Vanitha joined the Western Michigan University Program at Sunway College in August 2000. She earned both her Bachelors and Masters degrees at Pittsburgh State University, majoring in Computer Information Systems as an undergraduate and in Industrial and Organizational Psychology for her Masters. Ms. Vanitha teaches SOC 200 Principles of Sociology and three Psychology courses PSY 100 General Psychology, PSY 160 Child Psychology and PSY 250 Abnormal Psychology. In her spare time she is a student of Classical Indian Dance. Before coming to Sunway College Ms. Vanitha taught at other private colleges in Malaysia.Back to the top Ms. Yew joined Sunway College and the Western Michigan University Program in December 2000. She currently teaches BIS 102 Introduction to Information Systems, MATH 116 Finite Math and STAT (MATH) 216 Business Statistics. Ms Yew earned her Bachelors Degrees at University of Kentucky in Decision Science and Information Systems and also in Mathematics in 1996. Ms. Yew earned her Masters degree in Mathematics at The University of Tennessee in 1999. Before joining Sunway College, Ms. Yew taught at another private college in Malaysia.Back to the top
