Imaginary Cover Band
I was driving around earlier today running some errands, and I was surfing radio stations when I hit on Guns and Roses singing Sweet Child of Mine. I stopped on the station and listened until the end of the song. I don't like the guitar riffs, and I've always thought Axl Rose had a whiny, unpleasant voice. Still, it's a very nice song, with nice lyrics...one of the few GNR and GNR-isotope-band songs I'd say is really good.

This got me thinking about what a great cover Sweet Child of Mine would make for some chick with a guitar. OK, so I really wish I was the chick with the guitar, or better yet the lead vocalist for a hipster cover band (Yes, I know a cover band can never be hipster, since by its very nature it rips off other peoples' artwork, but work with me here). Those of you who have heard me sing are probably giggling by this point, and you'd probably be right that I'll never play the guitar or have a decent singing voice. I'm especially humble on this subject since I'm permanently partnered to a choral conductor with a professionally trained voice.

I've long been a secret admirer of that hard rock band style. In my head, I've got on some tough-chick rocker clothing and a rose-patterned bandanna around my head, and I'm singing about women I love. And fourteen year old girls are wearing patches with my album cover art on their denim jackets and backpacks. Sometimes it's nice to imagine alternate realities. It's not really my style, but it's an amusing thought for late nights when I can't sleep.

One of these days, I'll get around to making a list of songs I'd cover if I had a cover band.

Epilogue 9/6: My coworker Tim told me that Sheryl Crow recently covered Sweet Child of Mine. Damn, she's hot, and of course she thought of it before I did. Plus she sings and plays guitar, unlike me. Oh well.

Here's some other songs I'd cover:
I Don't Give a Damn About My Reputation, Joan Jett
Rhiannon, Fleetwood Mac
Hot Cha, They Might Be Giants
Mesmerizing, Liz Phair
Disturbance at the Heron House, REM
