On Eating Fish
I didn't eat meat, fowl or fish for a long time. I stopped after I started college for lots of reasons: I felt animal farming practices were wrong, I thought eating vegetarian would be healthier, and I couldn't handle the reality of eating meat. I felt if I was squeamish about the fact I was eating a dead animal, it probably wasn't right for me to consume it. I didn't like the separation of "beef" from cow, or "pork" from pig, and I certainly couldn't cope with the realities of butchering. I can't even kill insects, it rankles my conscience and grosses me out besides.

About a year ago, I started eating fish again. I stopped writing much about food when this happened. Suddenly, the lines between me and an omnivore were blurred, and I had a hard time justifying the boundaries I'd set. Why did I start eating fish?

1. I was trying to lose weight. Fish is a very low-calorie source of protein.
2. I love to dine out. It's difficult to dine out low-calorie and eat vegetarian. Sure, everybody has a vegetarian dish on the menu, but it's usually something covered in cheese or napped with cream sauce.
3. While I have been unsuccessful as a fisherman, I remember fishing as a kid and never had any personal ethical or moral quandary about killing fish...probably because it's so easy, you just asphyxiate them by pulling them out of the water.

I have now lost about 70 pounds, partly thanks to eating fish, and I've now made fish a part of my regular diet. I consume it at least 3 and usually 5 times a week. I really love the way it tastes if it's prepared properly. It's been interesting learning all about this new kind of food. I've started to experiment with preparing it, and even served roasted salmon during a dinner party not too long ago.

I guess that as my bisexuality and polyamory have blurred lines around sexuality and relationships, so has my fish consumption blurred lines around diet and ethics. I've decided it is time for me to come clean, so to speak, and start writing about my fish consumption. So some of the reviews you see on this site in the future may include fish dishes I've eaten at restaurants, and as I learn and grow as a fish cook I expect to be creating new recipes based on fish.
