Meetings with CM of Jharkhand

December 17, 2004

delegation of the International Maithili Council (IMC) led by International Spokesman of the IMC, Dr.Dhanakar Thakur and Dr. Guneshwar Jha, President, IMC, Jharkhand met today the Jharkhand Chief Minister Shri Arjun Munda over the non-inclusion of Maithili as a subject in the JPSC examination and other matters related to the development of Maithili speaking natives of Jharkhand.IMC, Jharkhand said that the Maithili-speaking people of the Jharkhand are feeling ignored as the State Govt. has not implemented so far anything in the direction of the development of Maithili and Santhal Pargana as per the resolutions adopted at Deoghar in the IMC’s State Conference on 24.8.2003, which was submitted to Jharkhand Chief Minister Shri Arjun Munda. The IMC said that “For the Constitutional Status to the Maithili the credit goes to the then Prime Minister Shri Atal Behari Vajpayee for which Maithils from the World over are grateful from their heart but the Jharkhand’s  BJP Govt. has not included Maithili in the examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission. It is irony that now Maithili is in the UPSC’s subject list but the BPSC and JPSC are ignoring the rights of Maithil boys and girls. The delegation put forward the view that it was also against the decisions of the Central leadership of the BJP which had given Constitutional Status to Maithili for which the Maithils had voted in favour of the NDA candidates in the Lok Sabha elections . Chief Minister Shri Arjun Munda remarked that Maithili’s case for inclusion in the JPSC will be considered sympathetically . Further CM showed his interest in the development of the Maithili speaking areas of Jharkhand, particularly the Santhal Pargana area which is Maithili speaking as per Grierson’s linguistic survey map which is the last official document. The delegation comprised of Shri Sanjesh Mohan Thakur of Godda, Sri Subodh Chaudhary, VP, IMC, Jharkhand, Shri Sanat Kr. Jha,  and Secretay, IMC, Dhurva.

--Dr. Dhanakar Thakur
