Linking

Linking is a method where Aes Sedai can combine their strengths. It is not very efficient, but in cases where raw strength is important, it can be very useful. After scouring the web for theories and models on the workings of the One Power, the author has discovered that the consensus seems to be that about thirty percent of the total strength of the linked members is lost. To clarify, the total strength seems to be the leader of the circle plus around seventy percent of the total of the rest of the circle.

In order to link, one person must lead the circle. She begins by embracing the source. Any others who are to join the circle prepare to embrace, but hold themselves just at the point of readiness, not actually embracing. The leader of the circle then embraces through them, drawing them into the link. Up to thirteen women can join in this method. A circle of thirteen would be strong enough to easily shield or gentle even the Dragon.

It is important to note that only the leader of a circle can do any active channeling. The other members are essentially helpless, only able to point out things to the leader that need her attention. Feelings experienced while linked are similar to those in the bond, although there are some differences. If a member of the link is injured, it will be felt by the other members of the link. If a member is rended unconscious, the shock will almost certainly shatter the link, likely rendering other members of the link unconscious as well. If a member of the link is killed, it would be unlikely for any members to remain conscious, and the trauma could conceivable kill another of the weaker members.
