Makoto transfers to Juuban Middle School amidst rumours that she was expelled from her old school because she hurt someone in a fight. Straight away she saves Usagi from some older kids who won't let her get away (using a mild and mostly off-screen act of violence), and Usagi is in awe. Usagi and Makoto become friends (Usagi calls her "Mako-chan"). Usagi says that Makoto is "manly", although in many ways this isn't true - she is good at cooking and enjoys shopping, both stereotypically feminine traits. Also, however much she claims not to be, she seems prone to crushes on men, just like Usagi.

Like Ami and Rei, loneliness seems to have played a large part in Makoto's past. Her parents died in a plane crash when she was quite young, and she now lives on her own. Also, at her old school she was in love with an older student who broke her heart. There seem to have been many other similar events in her life - like Ami and Rei, she does not seem to have had many friends before meeting Usagi. This isolation seems to have shaped her attitude towards life, and towards herself. However, over time she will undoubtedly find it easier to reconcile her "masculine" and "feminine" sides.

Makoto had a feeling that she had to move away from where she lived before, and she thought it was because her heart had been broken. Instead, it was so that she could meet the other Sailor Guardians, and become one herself. Makoto is Sailor Jupiter, the Guardian of strength and courage, who fights using the power of electricity.

When Makoto transforms into Sailor Jupiter, her hair becomes brown and much more curly, and the ponytail moves much higher up her head and has ornaments in it.
