Marching in memory of martyr Jill

More than 500 people marched through Coventry on Saturday, marking 10 years since the death of animal rights protester Jill Phipps.

Wearing purple ribbons, carrying purple flags and bearing purple-edged placards, the procession wound its way through the city centre to Swanswell Park.

There were speeches at the Bull Yard, where the act of remembrance began and out-side the cathedral where Jill's funeral had been held.

Marchers walked first to the sombre beat of a drum and then to an up-tempo samba rhythm, a combination of commemoration and celebration.

Jill died on February 1, 1995, after falling under a 50-tonne truck outside Baginton airport.

The 31-year-old had been protesting against the export of live veal calves from the site, a business started by Christopher Barrett-Jolley, who is now in jail for drugs offences.

Jill's mother Nancy, of Pioneer House, Hillfields, who was also part of the protest in which her daughter died, told the marchers on Saturday: "I just want to say thankyou everybody for coming to remember my beautiful Jill.

"We know she's in Heaven and looking after the animals for us. She'll never be forgotten. She was a beautiful human being who never knew a bad thought in her life."

Fellow campaigner John Curtin had put together a film about Jill's life which was shown later in the day.

He said: "Before Barrett-Jolley came up with the idea (of transporting live veal) it was one of the happiest times of Jill's life. She'd found her soul-mate. She was still coming on demonstrations but she was looking after (her son) Luke.

"When she saw the baby calves she knew Jill the warrior was back. She gave her whole life trying to stop it."

* Live veal exports from Baginton ended six months after Jill's death.
