LETTER TO MY MOTHER

by Jeneeya Suwal

Dear Ma,

After one year of stay away from you, I am writing a letter to thank you for everything you have done for me.  Twenty-four years I stayed with you; I never appreciated for what you did, I always complained, and gave you as much trouble as I could.  After all these years, I now realize how perfectly you have raised me and how comfortably you have managed me.

You always allowed me to do whatever we wanted but being always there as a guardian to see if I was in a wrong way and give me a hand.  As a child, I still remember I was so scared of you, I was scared of the punishment I used to get.  I know how much I cursed you for getting punishment, but now I thank you for whatever you did.  I would have never become me without all of your efforts, and I doubt without getting any punishment I wouldn’t be what I am now.  However, as I grew up you became more a friend than a mother.  You became my best friend and I did not have to find a friend to share my thoughts, emotions, and above all, my secrets.  I was more comfortable around you than with anybody else.

You always emphasized in my studies rather than in a household work.  You gave me all the facilities to study and did all the work, which as a daughter I should have been doing.  People criticized you for that, and for all the freedom, you gave me.  You gave me freedom of selection.  You never imposed your thoughts in me.  I appreciate the lessons you gave me in every step of my life.  You helped me in deciding on my own what is good for me and what is bad.

Even if I am an adult now, I still want to sleep in you lap; I know none of my sisters would feel comfortable with that.  I still want to give you trouble like a little child, and I miss quarreling with you for no reason.

All the credits for my today’s happy life go to you.  I thank you for letting me choose my life partner in my own and respecting my choice.  I thank you for teaching me to be happy and make others happy, to be good and good to others.

Oh! Ma, I love you so much.  I love you more than I love anyone else in my life.  I am proud to be your daughter.  I thank you for being my ma.  I thank you for letting me explore my life.

I thank you for everything you have done and everything you have given to me.

Your troublesome daughter
Jen
