About the Release of the Two Hunger Strikers in Greece

UPDATE
By comrades from the occupied Polytechnic University in Athens
February 6th, 2007

After an ongoing battle for freedom, anarchist Tarasio Zandorozni (70 days of hunger strike) from the Ukraine, Gerasimos Kyriakopoulos (54 days of hunger strike) and Nikos Katsadouras have been released on restraining orders, awaiting a court day to be set to examine their cases.

The three young men were arrested on the 6th of May 2006 during the European Social Forum held in Athens, where thousands of people took to the streets and clashes broke out between anarchists and the police which resulted in the burning and damaging of many banks and corporations, the destruction of police vehicles, and dozens of people being arrested .

Amongst them were Tarasio Zadorozni, Gerasimos Kyriakopoulos and Kostas Katsadouras, who were detained and put in prison on false charges without a court day being held.

Solidarity mobilisations began from the day our comrades were arrested and peaked with the polytechnic university of Athens been squatted by anarchists and a huge demonstation of more than 1,500 anarchists in the streets of Athens during the hunger strikers' battle for life.

We thank our comrades from England for your Solidarity efforts.

Background:

On May 6th, 2006, riots erupted during the European Social Forum march in Athens. For a period of three hours following a 2KM route, 2,500 anarchists in smaller groups of 400 to 500 attacked banks, large department stores, police cars, government buildings, the police headquarters, riot police, riot police buses as well as "Z-team" policemen (motorcycle team). They also attacked the US embassy, the Hilton hotel, the Italian embassy, and the riot police guarding the house of parliament.

20 people were arrested and 17 of them are charged and await trial for multiple felony charges. three of them are still detained since May 2006.

One of those three, Tarasios Zadorozni, an anarchist immigrant from the Ukraine, began a hunger strike to protest against his imprisonment on November 29th and was moved to the prison's hospital on December 10th due to health problems.

The second prisoner of the three, Gerasimos Kyriakopoulos began a hunger strike protest against his imprisonment on December 15th and because he has kidney problems he was moved to the prison's hospital on December 18th.

Since the first day of the hunger strike there have been dozens of solidarity actions by anarchist comrades all over Greece from demonstrations and the taking-over of radio stations to attacks on police stations, bank explosions, even a huge banner demanding their release attached to helium balloons that was set off in the air amongst hundreds of unsuspecting cops during the new year's eve Athens city center celebration at the fireworks display, to the embarrassment of gathered politicians and TV crews that were broadcasting the event live. Also, in Thessaloniki, the baby of Jesus Christ was stolen from the city's christmas crib while in its place a CD was left with propaganda material demanding the release of the prisoners.

Anarchists Riot Outside Solidarity Occupation of Polytechnic University
(January 17, 2007)

National marches were organised by many student associations in Athens and Thessaloniki, where more than 270 faculties are occupied by students, protesting against the revision of the constitutional article 16, introducing the establishment of private universities. Mainly however, the occupations are undertaken as subordination of academic stupidity to enterprising and economic planning, as well as the intensification of student subjugation through more demanding schedules, imposition of maximum times for studies, additional academic expenses, etc.

The march in Athens, began around 14:00, with the attendance of more than 15,000 demonstrators. A bit earlier there was an attack with Molotov Cocktails [firebombs] against riot-policemen who blockaded some streets around the techical university, while in the morning a CCTV [surveillance] camera was set on fire outside the technical university. Reaching to the march's ending some groups of demonstrators burned five government and diplomatic vehicles, two CCTV cameras, and clashed with the police. Later in the afternoon, many demonstrators went to the techical university, which is occupied by anarchist groups in solidarity with the three detainees of May 6th. The cops tried to attack the occupied building but were forced to recede, while two to three riot policemen caught on fire!

In Thessaloniki, after a call from student associations at the techical university, more than 3,000 persons marched at 18:00 towards the Ministry of Macedonia and Thrace. Groups of demonstrators broke in and set fire to the commercial bank near the ministry, a subsidiary of Piraeus bank, and a McDonalds, as well as two CCTV cameras. There were also conflicts between cops and demonstrators by the university area, when the police tried to attack the demo. No arrest were made anyway.

Police did not make any arrests after the clashes in Exarchia.

A storefront and the entrance to an apartment block in Exarchia were damaged as a result of the clashes but no injuries were reported.
