hyde A to Z items
A) Anger
Before, when I have nothing
to do, I can still make this useless time
meaningful and enjoy
it. For example, if there's a traffic jam, I'd say
" Oh well it's ok, I
can go slowly, no hurry," but now, I just want to
get home right away and
sleep, so I can't tolerate traffic jams!
B) Baby
I use to hate kids, actaully
I'm not sure if i hate kids or like kids...
because sometimes they're
cute, but when they cry .. -_-"
But anyhow I gradually
stuck to the "LIKE" side more. I never really thought
about my own kids though.
Hmm but I want one boy one girl, but raising kids is really
difficult ne.. so I'd
rather play with other's kids ^^ isn't it good that
you can play with them
and have no responsibilities? I guess that's good enough for now? (laughs)
C) Cook
Lets say, if i'm watching
TV and got hungry, can't get food from convinient store,
and it just sucks to
go out to eat alone... at the end I'll end up cooking myself.
I'll make those simple
but delicious food, which for me it's something like nabeyaki ..like
a hot pot or something.
You can eat it anytime right? I ate it for 2 consecutive days ne (laughs)
D) Death
Death..of course it's
scary..but why? Probably because there's still things that you wanna do
I think?
and the pain is also
scary .. There's another world after death desho? These days I sorta believe
in the existence of
ghosts....Its quite fasinating,
thinking that so many billions have died prior, then what do they do? and
if you see a ghost
then it's like what u'll
become when you die...ne?
E) Encore
How many times have we
done it ne? About 5 ? Although it's called encore,
i really think it's just
the start of 2nd part of the concert. People probably
thinks " ya..even if
we don't cheer and yell ENCORE laruku will still come out again" (laughs)
But when the voices of
"encore " merge into one, I can see it from the backstage..and last year's
tour,
we repeated "kaze ni
kienaide" 2nd time. That was a REAL encore.
Coz we didn't plan it.
The concert alerady ended, when the audiences are leaving,
we suddenly start again,
and everyone just rush back to their spot in total chaos and panic!!
But since we don't want
that kind of chaos to happen again, so sometimes even though we really
want to encore ( a real
one, not a planned one) we can't do it.
F) Fans
My feelings toward fans..
they're like my brothers and sisters.
There are naughty brothers..good
sisters.. kandou times etc.
Basically its really
cute ne~ Umm but I wonder what they like about us?
Wow isn't that a lot
of people though? (haha) when the concert tickets sold out,
it just feels really
unbelievable...fushigi na..
G) Goal
Goal equals death.
Therefore, I want to die satisfied...hmmm,
dunno why , these days
i feel like dying. Like after 12/27 Budokan LIVE,
and got platinum disk,
I was " happy to death " ( so happy that i can die )
Like those movie scenes,
before the main guy dies, he'll become shiawase..
H) Horoscope
so is there 13 or 12
horoscopes? At some point, people started saying
that there are 13...
but then the idea sorta died out later.. basically
i don't really believe
in these fortune telling things over the starts etc..
I) Idea
Basically (wow...hyde
uses "basically" a lot..ne? ^^;) it's
a thing that I think
of and give out, ...that's " Idea ".
Unlike in the movies,
when someone think of something, they'll go like " OH!"
and with a light bulb
that kinda thing. Instead its like " So how are we going to
solve this problem?"
and then start thinking. So when i write songs, I'll say " Ok, lets
write
some songs" and I'd just
do leisure things while searching the melody. Usually we don't have
these sudden
ideas that come, I have
to change to "thinking mode" first. For D'Arc~en~Ciel, we had this
idea
before thinking of doing
a single.
J) Journey
Isn't it scary to travel
at foreign places when you don't know their language?
Go with someone who can
speak foreign languages? It's good..but i have to be frank with
them na? Basically (ah
using this word again haido!!) I can't really open my heart to others ne..
(laughs)
Therefore,it's so much
trouble ne... but there are some things that i wanna see.
Like aurora..pyramids
etc. And i really want to see white whales too. I've not
even seen it on TV..so
i want to see cool things, I also want to see space.
K) Kill
In this photo session
i had to break this mirror..and when i break
the mirror there's this
shiver... If it's a guitar it's gonna probably gonna
be the same feeling..
but i've never broken anything that shouldn't be broken.
I've not even thought
of doing it iehter, but isn't killing someone
the same idea? Hmm..sometimes
think about it..dangerous eh? (laughs)
L) Love
If there's no love in
this world we can't live ne...? Wouldn't we feel
like robots..like animals..
the kind that i need most is the love can make
me feel at ease. The
love that i talk about in lyrics, is reflecting my own experiences..but..
there are many love songs
in the world ne.. like.. i love you..i'm waiting for you..
it's easy to say, but
i don't really understand ne, Love
M) Medicine
These days i took a lot
of medicine for flu. Colds are really scary ne..
if i'm a student, and
i can stay at home becoz of cold, it's good, but then
now we can't just take
breaks ne... If I have to work while I'm sick..
it sucks so much. And
I also drink the vitamin drinks to keep good health
other than medicine.
N) Night
These days i stayed up
till the morning, because of the " work cycle", usually
work at night.
But humans supposedly sleep at night isn't it? But because of
the advance of technology,
we don't really have to sleep at night anymore because
we have lights and stuff.
But i don't go out to play at night, although when i was younger
i hang around around
my neighbourhood. Now, i stay at home at night. Average
sleep is about 7 hours
ne.. I wake up around... (this part there's someting
wrong... coz haido said
he sleeps from around 10 AM - 4 AM, but ano,
that's not 7 hours..-_-"
so he either meant 10 PM - 4 AM, or 10 AM - 4 PM,
but he said "these days
i stayed up till morning" so he probably went to sleep
10 AM- 4 PM ne? and work
at night...!? )
O) Overseas
Our music is not known
to overseas ne..wouldn't it be nice if they can hear it too?
but once in a while we
get fan letters from overseas too ne
P) Phone
I seldom talk on the
phone. No one calls me..i don't call anyone..So my phone bills
are really cheap yo~
I don't really like talking over the phone, but i don't meet in person
a lot either (laughs)
Don't like to go out ne..
but I bring cell phones,
because it's super convinient. For example, when you're
meeting someone, if you
don't know the meeting place you can talk on the phone and
find the place at the
same time...or if you're driving, and there's a traffic jam,
you can call and say
that you'll be late. Or else u'd have to stop ur car somewhere
and use the public phone.
Q) Quake
Yesterday there was scale
3 earthquake ne? It's very scary..
There are more earthquakes
over Tokyo ne..don't have that in Osaka..I already forgot,
but when i first came
to Tokyo, there were always earthquake..it was culture shock.
(Um i guess he meant
it was quite shocking coz it's a diff way of living from Osaka?)
R) Room
My room is dirty yo!
(laughs) After moving, there wasn't much change. I only buy things
i want. It's not
like i'm stingy, but things that i don't need i don't like to keep it
in my room. Now
i want to buy a book shelf, but I can't find any particular one that i
like.
So the books are piling
up...My ideal is not the parvenu kind, I want an antique style
home. When i buy
furniture I usually buy wood color or iron etc. My bed is
white,
S) Smoke
I've been smoking for
almost 10 years..but i haven't thought of stopping yet.
When i first smoked,
it was those tabako for colds " Neo Cider " (<-- i think!?)
For real cigarettes,
it was "caster" and "Cabin Mild", "Mild Seven", "Cherokee" but it
stop producing.
Probably, I'll smoke until the doctor stops me...Now i smoke 1 box
everyday. About
25-30.. i smoke the most when i compose songs and watch video ne..
I don't smoke when someone's
sleeping, only before sleep and after sleep.
When i sleep,my nose
is allergic so i can't live with a smoker in my house.
T) Tear
These days, i haven't
cried. Ocassionaly I'll feel kandou. When I feel sick
I'd also want to cry.
I'll cry if there's touching events...I cried watching movies
(dunno what the movie's
called..sorry ^^;) Like Ghost is the type of movie
that makes everyone cry
ne.
U) UFO
I don't believe in UFO
. ALthough i used to believe. It's associated with ghost,
when i don't believe
ghost, i dont' believe UFO. Aliens riding on UFO coming to earth..?
I think there are aliens..from
earth to the next closest planet that has alien
inhabitants, wonder how
many light years we're apart...are they more civilized
and advanced than us?
But if they can come visit us then their technology's gotta
be more advanced than
us ne. But then why are they interested in earth ne?
Maybe they should be
interested in some other planet? That's why i really doubt
if UFO really came to
earth...I've read a book talking about the possibility
and they say it's low..From
the many books that i've read, it's the most realistic
i think. The universe
is so massive.. i bought this "universe map" thing,
and the solar system's
like a little dot at the side... but the solar system
is already really big!
..Hmm there must be others living outside of earth,
very very far away. If
possible i'd like to go to other planets, i'm interested
in aliens too
V) Valentine
Last year's valentines
day.. i saw " Dan-ba-in" (laughs)
I got lots of chocolates
from fans too. Previously...I don't have much
memories of valentines
day. Now i recieve from fans, but when i was a student
I didn't get any! so
i hated valentines day.
W) War
Because there's war,
i don't believe there's God. If there's God, seeing
his people dying, and
he's not doing anything. So, i think there's no God
in this world.
X) X-day
X-day is doomsday, the
destruction of humans ne. 1999 July, I don't believe, but I
had a bet with sakura,
betting if something will happen on that day.
Something happening as
in ..at least a few thousand people dying, disasters etc..
then sakura wins.
And the prize..we'll decide on 1999 New Years Day. (Laughs)
I don't think Notradamus's
prophecies will come true.
(HSS: Hmm.. of course
at this time haido never thought of what will happen
just a little while later
after this interview... that sakura event..
but i wonder if they
really kept this bet? even after that.... Ark and Ray was
released on July 1st
ne, and you know how Laruku say, that was the "disaster"...
so is haido purposely
allowing sakura to win? ^^;; fufufufu)
Y) Year
The year passes by really
fast, just quite unbelievable that one year will end.
Although there wasn't
a lot of change, but the people from the South don't
like Japan because they
think having four seasons is not good. But I don't think
so because isn't four
season's great? The countries in the South doesn't have four
seasons, But they have
rainy season ne? Isn't the four seasons in Tokyo quite
distinct? There's also
snow....i think that's very good ne..
Z) Zoo
I think Zoos are quite
cruel...for the sake of making everyone else happy...
Of course, when i was
a kid, I went to zoo too and i didn't think of it as cruel,
but then i didn't like
it either, coz i think it stinks (laughs) But i like the
aquarium, I went to the
sea world quite often. There was a Jinbeizame (whale shark)
it was very sugoi. But
everytime i go to a zoo i'll feel pitiful for them...it makes
me feel bad ..like the
white tigers etc, they have to repeatedly doing some trick
over and over again,
no matter if they wanna do it or not. If the space
in the zoo can be wider,
just like living back in the wilderness then maybe it would
be better ne....

but not exactly the same..there's a slight difference.
but because there's only
a slight difference, it's hard to remember! if the whole
phrase is different then
i can remember it even easier...

h: Yeah i notice, at
that time i even tell myself that i have to be aware of that part
because it's easy to
make a mistake..but at the end i still made a mistake..when
i wrote lyrics i didn't
think about what problems it will cause in performance you know...

to you, what was it like?
h: Um as i have answered
usaully, it's undescriable, very wonderful. (fushigi?)
I: Why so?
h: because everyone say
i don't talk a lot, usually it's like 1 answer to 1 question..
I: That's your style

h: ...hmm.not too much
of a style. But i need to know what you want to know to answer you

u feel about the tour?
h: since its outdoor,
it gives me a feeling that i'm in direct contact with fans.
At first..the ground
has nothing..then we build a stage..and then it's crowded with
people..from the start
to end..the whole process is memorable.
I: How about the effect
of outdoor/indoor on the music?
h: Oh of course.
It's different from Tokyo Dome. For example, each song has a different
feeling..or its color.
For instance, if i sing the world " red " it's a different
feeling to say it in
outdoors. I can feel the whole scene and the story behind when
it's outdoor
because i can see the
sky...and there's no walls or boundries as if contacting with the nature.
It's much easier to sing
out the meaning of the song.
I: did any song really
touched you ( or make u feel kandou) ?
h: the silver shining,
it gives me a feeling of comfort...very free, like in the wind.
I: I went to your LIVE
before, it's really good, but for 2 hours..non stop of performance,
wouldn't it be very tiring?
h: I felt the happiest
in this LIVE..so...and i also told myself this time it's gonna be
very harsh and tiring,
so i just put it another way as if i'm exercising. So it wasn't
too stressful.
If i don't think about the worst scenario then it will just make me feel
worse.
I: That's right.
Really, this Tour was very successful. Hmm..so lets talk about Love
Flies.
What is the lyrics trying
to tell?
h: Hmm... the lyrics
is a little different compared to previous Ken songs. This time we
wish to use
words to bring out images.
I: That's not easy ne!
h: Un..in Kasou, Ken
filled out some lyrics himself too..the english parts.
We tried to use words
to bring out images..but at the end we didn't. Yet it still
gives us images from
the monologue ( of ken..the kasou..monologue..^^;)
I: Was the monologue
there already during the first stage of the song?
h: yeah, it's like a
poem.
I: DId you ask Ken if
the lyrics is reflecting his thoughts?
h: I didn't ask, butr
i know he's trying to tell us something.
I: The Title?
h: yeah.
I: Hmm..this time..there
are lots of english in the lyrics too, is it because
it's harder to express
in japanese?
h: Yeap, sometimes..can't
find the right japanese words to express that feeling.
We did thought of filling
all english lyrics for this song, but at the end we
tried to put as much
japanese as possible.

trying to tell us?
h: Hmm....
I: Many people, when
they see the title Love FLies they'll think it's a love song.
h: Well..it's kinda a
love song...but it's special...it's very..blurry..and unclear..
that we can't really
catch what it is.

h: We even went to some
place that the camera man did not go..like...forest...

ambition?
h: Ambition? More like..wildness...
(the japanese of ambition is close to wildness)

are your plans?
h: Hm...pureness.

I: How was the outdoor
live?
T: really good! Since
it's outdoors, i can look at the night sky as i play, the feeling
is very good.
I: You saw the copy band
contest?
T: Yeah...but there's
not one group that really did a good copy of us.
I: It's pretty hard to
imitate L'Arc..
T: Haha of course, if
they did a good job imitating then we're in trouble! Haha
We're professional artists...if
it's that easy for others to mimic then we're
in a lot of trouble ne...(hmm.well
that's true..but hey Te-chan.. i think they
did a good job already...common..say

Actually i don't
watch these performance very often.
I: Very busy?
T: From stepping in the
place till standing on the stage, there's too much to do!
Don't have time to do
other things.
I: I thought you didn't
join in the Raido Control?
T: There are 6 places
of performing and each place 3 days so a total of 18 days (1 day is rehersal)
But i only joined the
Radio Control stuff about 3 times. At first it's the responsibility
of all
4 of us, but hyde and
yukkie they didn't even do it once..because we're just too busy!
I: Since you guys are
so busy, how can you have time to record?
T: Not really. it's not
related to time. Even if you give us a month to write songs,
It doesn't mean that
we can finish it. And it doesn't mean that the song is going to be
good.
I: What is necessary
for writing a good song?
T: Talent. If you
have talent, even if you don't have time, you can still do it.
But if you don't have
that talent, even if you're given a lot of time, you wouldn't
be able to write a good
song. ( So true Tetsu~~ you're so smart *^^* i admire you so much!)
I: That's right, so you
guys will take some time to write songs when you're not busy ne..
after tour, you guys
went to asia to promote right away. Anything memorable?
T: Oh many wonderful
things, very memorable.
I: Do you feel happy
that your music is loved by people that are not japanese?
T: No...because i really
don't know. This time we didn't go there for a concert,
it's only interview and
we only meet the media..and they keep telling us we're
very popular ..but i
think they're just telling us as a politeness..it's not very
believable ( tetsu~ Believe
them! it's true!) they even say many fans want us to have
concert there...but maybe
no one even know who we are! Hmmm...well maybe we can have
live in thailand..? at
least there will be 800 audiences...haha ( T_T tetsu!! we'll
come to the concert for
sure! please please please believe us! )
I: This theme of the
asian trip is like " L'Arc Asia In and Out" what do you think about
that?(I dunno how to
word it..
in and out? the kanji..
ehmm i dunno..maybe it's more like Outcome..or...Influence)
T: It's like..headlines
of sports channel...obvious and clear..and some funny quotes
and stuff.
I: What kind of promotion
is it actually?
T: Actually it's nothing
different from promotion to hokkaido..fukouda..
I: Were any decisions
made then?
T: None..we just said..IF
we can..we'll TRY to have live there....
I: After this promotion
trip, did you feel differently about the places?
T: Hmm..probably.
When we went to a Thailand radio show, it's a western music show..
and it's rare that japanese
songs will be on its charts. But i don't really understand..
coz in japan, we have
two different catagories..japanese music and other music
but in Thailand there's
western music, thailand music, and japanese music. So it's
kinda nice that we made
it into the western music chart. And in Taiwan...the place is
deeply affected by japanese
trends already, and japanese artists are well-known in there..
but Thailand is different.
I: Oh, that's really
good!
T: Yeah.We also played
with another band at the radio show.
I: Did you talk to them?
T: No..but they gave
us their CD. Their name is SHOGUN JUMP
I: Shogun jump?
T: It's quite similar
to our cover.
I: Are they famous in
Thailand?
T: I guess so? Haha,
their song is on #2 in the chart..
I: Oh..but have you heard
of them before?
T: Yeah, i also saw their
music video before.
I: Can you describe this
band?
T: Very good!
I: How about hong kong?
T: Very nice, i like
hong kong! ( yeah ^0^)
I: You've been to Hong
Kong before.what was the difference?
T: That time..it was
the 1997 returning thing..and it's got lots of celebration going on..
and the night view is
very beautiful....this time, there aren't celebrations
I: Is Jrock spreading
in HK?
T: I dunno..maybe not.
Hong Kong is still a place with lots of cultures, compared to Taiwan
it's only affected by
Japan.
I: So do you feel satisfied
about the results of this trip?
T: It's different from
what we've been hearing, it's very nice that we can experience ourselves.
I: Did you talk to people
there?
T: Hmm....in Taiwan we
didn't even go out ...we only walked around in the mall around
the hotel...and then
many people will come over and say " oh weren't you on TV last night?
you're very kakkoii ne!"
and even going to dinner, many people will recognize us.
I: Why was love flies
made into single?
T: as usual..no specific
reason.

T: A lot...it's hard

T: it's really hard to

But then still feel that
the voice doesn't sound like my voice. And english...after asian
tour,
i feel that my english
pronounciation has improved.

attractive about L'Arc~en~Ciel?
T: Hmm...most attractive?

isn't that what's more
important supposingly...)
I: How about these days?
T: Hmm...the last night
of Grand Cross Tour i guess.
I: that day it's broadcasted
live in the whole japan, what's the difference compared
to the live video?
T: Oh..a big difference.
Because the camera man did total different job. The switching
of cameras were totally
different. there were 10 cameras, and some scenes might
be missed because it
is switched to a diff camera.
I: But the video's still
not released....
T: Hmm...because it takes
a little time to edit.. so it will be released on 12/1..
but no matter if it's
performance, switching, camera, it's all live..if not
you can't feel the "
LIVE " feeling ne..
I: Hmm..after releasing
the live video, 2000 will come soon..what are your wishes?
T: hard to say....actually
1999, 2000, and 2001 are all important dates to me. 2001,
i really wish i can have
a space tour, but 1999 and 2000 are also very important.
I: What do you want to
do personally?
T: i want a license of
driving a ship
I: Where do you want
to go?
T: Well even if i buy
a ship i can only go to the sea once or twice a year..but
having a motorcycle license
i can't go to sea..
I: But isn't it too expensive
... ( well our Te-chan is rich now..haha)
T: But when some emergency
happen, then i can drive the boat to isolated places without anyone,
isn't that nice?
I: O..hmm..ok..last question.
After ark and ray..and the tour..and now new single...wonder
what's force behind u
guys?
T: Where? We're just
working as normal..but maybe because the timing was good, the
released songs can reach
many audiences. For example, no matter how good your song is,
if it can't reach many
audience, then no one would know it and appreciate it
I: So is tie-up very
important?
T: Actually it's not
really like a planned tie-up, but if it allows our song to be
heard at more place by
more people, then it will of course increase the number of people
that appreciate the song.
But Love flies, it actually didn't really have any timing..

song,
if it's good or not.
because, when a song is finished it will have growth itself, and will
meet many people who
like it, and would be heard at many different places, and will grow slowly.

i asked him if he has
a band and he said that his band had disbanded
and he's looking for
new members. he plays guitar.and i told him i play bass
and i'm looking for members
too. then he suggests that we go down to the studio
some time..and at that
studio, i met hyde for the first time. So its' like,
if i didn't go to Zi:Kill's
concert, i'll never get to know hyde! It's indirectly
like..Yukihiro gave me
the chance to know hyde....interesting eh? ( ~~ sounds so
romantic..haha...this
is FATE right?)
y: when i first met you,

t: oh when Die in Cries
came to Osaka for concert? We
were in the same company..so
i went to the live too. was that the

went to many laruku live becoz i wanna watch it

us, and we hang out a lot in his house. sometimes when
i go to his house yukkie's
there..or vice versa....and soon we became good friends.
naturally, we go to eat
together, play playstation together, we both like
Gundam and Evangelion
a lot!
y: but when i heard that
tetsu likes Asuka, i was like " what the hell!?"

likes asuka ne..)
y: Haha...oh man, for
me, it's Ayanami Rei all the way!

Rei fan and i'm Asuka fan...Yukkie
taught me lots of stuff
about Eva ne. He saw it when it was first on air

I only saw it last year
when it was played on TV again..kinda slow ne.
he taught me lots of
stuff...also collected plastic models.
y: really got to know
each other that well in that friends house ne!
at that time, i put some
equipments in that friend's house and was doing remix for
Tokyo Yankees (???) that's
why i always go to his house ne.
t: when i went, yukkie
was doing remixes. i thought, " Wow! he even knows how to do that?
sugoi! such a great person!"
i admired that so much!
y: that sight was very
weird though?
t: yeah weird weird
( i dun understand why
yukkie said it's weird..)
y: there were lots of
equipment and also cloth for reflecting the sound..
the light will reflect
off the monitor and i can't see it that way...so
we only have very few
lights on in the room( what is that weird?)
t: i was thiking what
the hell is he doing at that time...

still use " polite terms" at that time ( in
japanese people use polite

y: and at that time we
went to eat sushi together and talked about the dentist.
t: exactly at that time,
i went to the dentist..i introduced him to yukkie and yukkie
goes there too now. my
whole family goes there too ( wow~~~what a lucky dentist..haha
can serve yukkie and
tetsu and his whole family...)
That time we hang out
about 2 - 3 times a week..but we had even more fun
when we went to Hong
Kong ne. At first yukkie didn't like travelling. but he had
no reason to
not go with us so he
went.
y: I'll not go by myself
becoz i dun like asia that much anyway.
Anyhow the trip was very
very fun!
t: i feel that its a
"Panku" ( puncture?), cyber-panku

open areas and areas with lots of skyscrapers.
when we went there they
still have kowloon city.

t: before england returned
hong kong, the air tickets and hotel was very expensive ne

i went to see Zi:kill live i'm living that kind of life too...

it's like talking to senpai...even in age he's older than me na.

year...but we're actually borne in the same year.

my own profile, i was surprised myself too.....man..i started

in this world, having
more experience is better ne. people look at u differently
depending on ur age and
ur experience. therefore, i use " polite terms " to address yukkie,
well of course now i

y: but at first i still

interview for asia on new album Ark and Ray.
(yes, this is the interview
in the GB special booklet in 4 languages,
in case u didn't get
that book i'll type it up here ^^;)
Since the end of last
year, L'Arc~en~Ciel has been immersed in recording a new
album and they at last
have given birth to what should be a major event for 1999,
their two headed monster
albums "ark" and "ray".
As everyone in Japan
knows, their career, originality, and also their continuous taking on enormous
challenges that defy
all expectations, has put them deservedly at the top of the current scene
( i agree~~)
Word of L'Arc~en~Ciel
is of such magnitude that it has now spread throughout all of Asia and
their latest efforts will see simultaneous release not only in Japan, but
in six other countries : Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore,
and the Philippines.
To say that the albums'
sound is superb is inadequate. Included on the albums are six titles
released last year, starting
with the three singles whose simultaneous release took listeners by surprise,
"shinshoku-lose control-" "Honey" , and "kasou". Also on the albums
are singles that followed, " DIVE TO BLUE", " snow drop" and "forbidden
lover" and the current hits " HEAVEN'S DRIVE" and " Pieces". But
this is more than just a " best album". New tracks written especially
for the album have wonderfully
vibrant robustness which,
when intermingled with the dark hues of the singles to that our ears know
so well, creates a sound which will be a legend.
The rhythm section interplay
of tetsu on bass, ken on guitar and yukihiro on drums is steady and unique,
and floating over them is hyde's enigmatic vocals.( hehe i like that term
enigmatic! really describes hyde's voice..it's like..almost hypnotizing!)
Each track possesses
an essence of its own, and the whole irresistibly intertwines to reveal
a perfect balance. Born in 1999 "ark" and "ray" are the birth of
a rock classic, it is sure to be, along with the name L'Arc~en~CIel, the
talk of generations yet to come. ( hehe yeah i'm gonna tell my kids in
the future!)
---When
did you come up with the grand plan to release two albums at once and how
was it conceived?
tetsu:
It took a year for the concept and six months to make it. Really,
though, it was a natural process.
Last
year we released 7 singles and 6 of those songs are still not in an album.
Putting those six songs in an album makes it end up like a greatest hit
release.
Releasing
it this way is meant to avoid that. We thought it would be a bit
more balanced with the singles spread out over two albums.
---why are u releasing
two seperate albums and not a double album?
tetsu: The Smashinb Pumpkins
have a double album, right? It's so long I couldn't listen through it.
It's just that even for artists I like,
double albums are hard
to listen to. So, by releasing each album separately the listener
can buy and listen to the one he wants. you can first buy the one
you want, give it a good
listen, get to know it, and then buy the other album if you like.
hyde: but that approach
is too laid back, the first pressing might run out. Really, you need
to buy both at the same time. *laughs (good marketing ne..)
---was
everyone in the band in agreement about making two albums?
ken:
at first i thought " what are you talking about?" *laughs
yukihiro:
yeah
---who first brought it
up?
ken: *points to tetsu
tetsu: it was an idea
that came up when there were no songs, nothing at all. It was my
suggestion,
but I still worried about
whether we could really do it. I thought if we take that route I'm
really going to have to work hard! *laughs
ken: deep in mind i was
unconsciously calculating about what kind of songs should we write.
tetsu: if the reaction
had been " no way!", i would have forgotten it right there.
---
nobody was against it?
tetsu:
well at the time there was no basis for opposition, i mean, we still didn't
know what was coming *laughs
--- how hard was it? did
it catch you off guard?
tetsu: well, i always
write around 14-15 songs when we write for an album, so i thought we'll
do it somehow. i felt that
if we couldn't write
anything once we started and had no decent tracks, then i'd be ok to release
it as a regular album and anyway,
we could still think
about it after we started. i took that sort of easy attitude about
it. anyway we did it! *laughs
---did
you feel overwhelmed by the pressure to write so many songs?
hyde:
for me the feeling was like it always is when we begin recording and the
number of songs i wrote was the same as usual. Nothing was really
different,
it was made according to deadline.
tetsu:
I first brought it up so i thought i had to give it all my ability, but
writing songs seemed the same as always.
yukihiro:
everybody was writing songs so i thought i had to start writing, too.
if i didn't, everybody would have thought i was neglecting my duties! *laughs
ken
: i thought it wouldn't really happen. We had up to two weeks to
write songs after the tour, but i thought,
first
i'll take a break and ended up going out. *laughs
tetsu:
we said we each would bring our contributions for candidates to be put
on the album and the first day we got together we had absolutely nothing
right?
ken:
yeah..it was a pretty uncomfortable vibe *laughs
tetsu:
everybody was saying " i dun have any songs yet", so naturally our A&R
director was upset a little.
hyde:
usually the case is that even if we say " haven't done it" at least ken
has written a couple of songs, but that day even he didn't have anything.
i
said " you must be joking, where did you hide them? " up to the last moment
i didn't believe him *laughs I think once we were faced with that reality
it spurred us to write. We were saying " noway. we can't do the double
album like this"
tetsu:
we proceeded with a sense that we would finish the writing in 98
ken:
for a moment, i was overwhelmed at the nmber of songs i had to write but
i thought i just had to get down and write out one song at a time.
---yukkie's songs, which
are interspersed throughout the albu, have their own unique dramatic approach
and contribute to its overall agreeable tone.
hyde: they are really
inspiring. even at the demo tape stage yukkie had the lyrics.
i thought " awesome!
english lyrics!" when he gave me the tape he said it was ok to make changes,
but i said " it's great, we're not changing anything" *laughs. I sang them
without any mistakes or missing a single word.
yukihiro: wow, please
go on talk about more good stuff ^^ *laughs
tetsu: totally yukkie-like.
I think they're different from the type i write. i think an album
is more cool
when yukkie's songs are
in it.

any of the song candidates left off the album?
tetsu:
not a single song was left out.
ken:
if we squeezed anymore we'd bleed *laughs
---so it seems like you
are four individuals with four styles of songs. ken's songs make
me think that a secret agent is going to appear.
tetsu: that's for sure

songs have a sense of viewing wide open spaces, while yukkie's songs have
a sense of minimalism (like space?) i can't put hyde's sensibility into
a single phrase..*laughs
do
you all have some kind of notion of one another's song writing style?
hyde
: we do somehow, they're kind of like habits.
ken:
they're each like stories. but when we're writing our approach is
not too
rigorously
think about getting a balance between them.
tetsu:
but what the four of us do is what naturally becomes L'Arc~en~Ciel
---turning to "ark" and
"ray", how do they differ in terms of sound and feeling?
yukihiro: i don' tthink
there's a clear distinction between them.
tetsu: maybe in a sense
they're like twins.
hyde: in terms of sound,
ark which begins with forbidden lover, has a sense of "wetness".
i think that " ray",
which starts with " shi no hai" feels arid. the former somehow has
the image of the
beginning of a sea journey
and the latter has a sense of rays of light bursting through.
---did
you first decide on the two titles, divide up the songs and then settle
the song order?
hyde:
yes. we also thought about the imagery of the titles. that took an
awful lot of time
ken:
we came up with an endless number of angles. in the end it felt like a
24 hour title deciding session. we got into a state that none of
us could take things
cool.
tetsu:
dividing up the songs over two albums and the song order- we talked endlessly
about why it should be done this way or that. an exquisitely healthy
balance.
at
least as nutritious as "karuni: maguicchi" right? *laughts (its the name
of a currently popular nutrition product, means " calcium 2 : magnesium
1 " haha)
---so why are they titled
"ark" and "ray"?
tetsu: notradamus made
a prophecy that an terrifying apparition will descend in July of 1999 at
which time the four of us will board on an " ark " and look towards the
" ray " of light.
Actually, it turns out
that the terrifying appartion is the July 1st release date of the two albums!
*laughs
"we are the prophecy!"
we're , all totally surprised ( hehe whatever te-chan!)
---throughout
the album today's alienation and the hopes of people somehow seem to be
sun as if they are different sides of the same coin. When you wrote the
lyrics, where you conscious of the society?
hyde:
in the back of my mind i am constantly aware that this year is 1999.
I mean, if it were, say 1978, what would there be to get excited about?
1981
is OK too, but when i try to look back on tha time i don't feel
anything
in particular. But 1999 is the year that has fascinated me ever since
i was little ( yeah i was facinated too hyde..coz i spent 3 hours with
you..haha)
tetsU:
i'm full of anticipation. i mean, what's going to happen?
hyde:
i feel very emotional now that this is the actual year. i am constantly
thinking that the task of these words is to leave a message of the grand
theme 1999.
tetsu:
i've really looked forward to this since i was little. Maybe it will
be like " 2001 : A Space Odyssey" *laughs. But maybe not becoz in the movie,"
HAL", was born on December 1, 1992, was actually it was never really born.
hyde:
the particular quality of each song decides where i will go with lyrics,
but i always have 1999 as a hidden theme. i listen to the composer's
theme and
wait
for inspiration. when there's no inspiration i sing the song to connect
it to whatever i'm feeling at the moment. that's how i always work.
(what
if u were thinking about Megumi huh? write songs like..what is love?)

u feel now that this major two album work has finished.
yukihiro: lets go to

ken: i feel wiped out
becoz the work to which we have devoted ourselves one day suddenly ended.

Now- From Akuma to
God?
Hmm right now, i feel
that i'm getting a cold ne. My throat...um..it feels like i age Kabba
ebi sen ( a kind of fried shrimp cake..), and the fried cake is stuck up
my throat. If i have that feeling, i think my throat is all swollen
already.
The Live tour is already
finished, sometimes i want to relax. Yesterday i had my day off,
and i opened the windows to sleep. Then this editor said " A kind
of person like you should get poked ..", so today when i was taking pictures,
i have to sit in that bath tub with many roses .... *laughs* ( hey hyde..but
i think that picture looks really cool ne )
Yesterday i was playing
Kamen rider game. This game is a playstation fighting game.
Sometimes i really get addicted to playing Playstation. These days
i'm addicted again. Yesterday i bought " Beat Mania:...but then i
got bored of it in 20 min...^^ *laughs* I'm so smart right? hehe ( wow...got
bored of that game in 20 min? must be very good at it~..i suck at playing
that game ne... T-T ) I am very good at using Kamen Rider, when i
fight with Shokkaa i passed the stage easily ...surprisingly. Ne..i
also collect Kamen Rider cards, i have 100 of them! Like trading
card, when you beat your enemy, you can get a " You can pick a card" point,
and then u can pick a card. If you get the "classic scene " card,
there will be some interesting secret talks in the back of the card.
When you have lots and lots of cards, you will always get the same card
repeating...These days, when i take the cards out to look at them, i can't
find much new cards ne...hmm...maybe when this interview is published i'm
already tired and bored of this game ( Hyde.. how can u change so fast
ne...T-T )
What do i want to do now?
Hmm.........ne....Ah, I want to go to some vacation resort to continue
playing Playstation, and i want to eat good stuff~ I really hope i can
live some lazy and easy life, hehe the kind that will make my parents cry
if they ever sees it, but when everyone else see they'll laugh.
One month.....no...one year..around that...i can continue that kind of
lifestyle.. But can't be with friends, because if i'm alone there wouldn't
be that many opinions. And if i am with a friend, i can't really
ignore them and not do anything else and play playstation for several months.
If i go to the resort...i will play Biohazard. I love this game,
but i have to spend a lot of time, so i can't really play this game in
normal situations.
What's different about
me and people of the same age? Um...what's different ne?...MONEY!...money
or fame....? Or.....that..kind of god feeling ( What the hell ??
hahaha...eh....u saying that u're God?) Even Devil doesn't matter...because
if there are followers, Akuma ( devil ) can become God. ( ^^;; yes...even
if u're akuma i'll be your follower hyde~~ ) I don't really worship
that kind of...super natural...attraction that God has, but when i sing
Live..I just have this feeling " This is the right shape "..Earlier, my
dad came to see my Live, then he told me... " This is a kind of religious
activity ne". I thought " An, that's right". When i sing it's
different from normal times...hehe..even mentally different..i feel like..SUPERMAN!
( hahahahahh!!!!) If i am not in this business...What will i be doing ne?
I think i'll be those kind of designer ...If not then i'll probably do
some partime job and travel around... Music is my hobby, so i'll continue
to play my guitar. What will band become? It will have to depend
on who i meet and the freinds around me and how they want it to be like....Even
if i can't, i would like to gather together a few times a year to play
some music...
Past- Except this moment,
everything is past.
This thinking includes
knowledge...to me, when " Now " ..this moment is passed it is the past.
Except "Now" this split second, everything else is past. Past is..um..single
colored..like yellowish or...without colors, i have this feeling.
Of course, i have lots of past that i hide, but basically i feel that past
is...sad and "shallow"...
In my life now...I always
think about past. These days when i was playing Kamen Rider game...i
thought about the times when the Kamen Rider show was till on TV.
Kamen rider was the occupation that i wanted to be ever since i have sense
and know how to think ( hahahaha...) But i don't really want to become
Kamen Rider's real person, i just want to wear that costume ^_^ Long
time ago, someone said to me " There is no Kamen Rider in this world"
and i said " No, i just want to wear that costume". Maybe, at that
time..i said it just coz i was mad...but it still feels very fresh in my
memory till now ^^. Um..i heard that the guy ( dunno his hiragana
name..) who was the Kamen Rider's actor had this Sega commercial.
At first before he changes into Kamen rider or after it's both acted by
that guy...that's what i read in the Kamen Rider game ^_^
I also remember i have
bought " Kamen rider snack " before. When i go home, i'll cut out
the Kamen Rider figure on the bag and keep it up. Mom will draw me
Kamen Rider too. My mom said :" You really liked Kamen Rider when
you were little ne~ Always fly down from the stairs!" And wrap
a cape ( actually a kind of cloth that Japanese people use to wrap up sleeves
of Kimono) around, yelling " Toooo" and jump down * laughs * ^_^
At that time, i have a
bicycle that has Kamen Rider's head in the front. ( 1800 yen at that time)
I ride that bike around all the time. At that time..there was this
accident. Because some kid had a cape at his neck and fe was running
around, the cape got caught up something and choaked the kid to death...The
reason was that at that time Kamen Rider was just too popular, so every
kind like to imitate him. Well...so we learn that those "capes" should
only be used to tie up Kimono sleeves ne. But i never really followed
that..hehe. My parents bought many toys for me, so i never really
felt poor or lacking something. My favorite toy is Microman.
It's very small, and every joint can be moved. Why do i like Kamen
Rider ne...? Hmm... I don't really know, maybe coz i often see it on TV
and got attracted some how...Kamen Rider is what hero is like to me when
i was small ne.

true
Future...hm...I don't
want to be an old stupid ojisan ^^;;. If more recent, like...1999
July?..i wonder what will happen ne...I think it is a thing that have to
be in consideration..although i think nothing would really happen...ne..then
it's 2006..He? Don't have to talk about 2006? *laughs* Um...these
days, the world make me feel weird...i would think " Hm..is anything going
to happen?" But I think if it is not something bigger than an atomic
bomb, it wouldn't be considered " Something happened". ( Then Hyde
was asked about this Korean satellite issue..i dun even know what it is..hehe..the
satellite is called Podon) Hyde continues.... " Oh, PoTEdon?" ( he
said it wrong..it's Podon!) Hehee..i'm just kidding, i said
it wrong on purpose. But i said it too much, sometimes i can't even
identify which is the real name. If someone asks about what PoTEdon
is, i'll tell them it's Potato Monster ^^;;; ( What the..) But, this satellite
issue created a lot of problems ne...although i don' t have the ability
to give any opinion, but this issue is pretty important...If it is ignored
it would imply that they can do it again. If this thing flys across
the sky and you don't know what it is and you have to shut up, what do
u feel if it happens again ( i dun undersatnd what Hyde's talking about
in this part..haha) I thought several times if it is a small problem,
but if small problems are not dealt with they will become big problems.
So i think it should be dealt with calmly.
There was a time that
my dream came true. When i was still a student, in my dream, a damn
white guy called me out and beated me. And later it really came true
( Which bastard beat up my Hyde~ i'll kill him!) When i went to class,
" Ne? This scene.....looks so familiar with the one in my dream....?"
When i was thinking about this, the door opened and some guy said " Hi,
come out for a while" When they were beating me up, i was thinking
" Man, this is same as my dream ne!" ( hehe..how come u sound like you
don't care when u are beaing beated up....^^;;) Although it's nothing
pleasent, i still think it is ..cool..because i feel that dreams can really
come true ne!
Other dreams? haha,..like
become pope and conquere the world *laughs* Everyday, there are lots
...if it really comes true? hehe...first i would buy a really nice mansion
for my parents, with servents. Although i don't really do...but sometimes
i hope to be good to my parents ....Before i bought them watches..they
were very happy ne ( Wow~~ Hyde you're such a good son ^^)
Our band's future? ....hmm.....brainwash
(?!?) ..our effect become more...Like in promotion video, we had a lot
of images that just flashed for a second. This is called "subliminal"
commercial....( so professional ne..Hyde..) Because on Dec 23th we will
release our Live Video, we added that kind of effect...although it's just
1 year from that Live concert..i feel like it's been 3 years ne!
