Tip of the Week 6

It appears that this was not properly delivered the last twice I tried sending it to the list.

It can be quite difficult sometimes for learners to decide which word to use for "take", and the natural temptation is to go for the simple verb "gabh", which is a verb most learners meet early on.

However, it should be remembered that "gabh" should not be used when physically taking something from somebody or from a place, which includes when "take" means "carry / transport" as in "Take your books with you."

In most other circumstances, though, "gabh" may be used e.g.

"Gabh do bhiadh"
"take /have your food".

"Gabh do ùine"
"Take your time."

"Gabh cuairt"
Take a walk

"Gabh aithghearr"
"Take a shortcut" etc. etc.
