Tip of the week 5.


 
In translating the English expression "keep up with", Gaelic does not use "le" ("with") but "ri" ("to").
Therefore
 
"Chan urrainn dhomh cumail suas riutha."
"I can't keep up with them."
 
Strangely enough, without "suas" (up) i.e. "cumail ri" the phrase means withstanding, standing up to e.g.
 
"Cha b' urrainn dhaibh cumail ris an doininn."
"They couldn't stand up to the storm."
