Although I was very young when Elmer died, I remember going to Elmer and Esther's house one day with my mother. We were getting ready to leave, and my mother was still talking to Esther, when Elmer took me by the hand to one of the other rooms of the house, where he had a "hidden" stash of candy, which he stuffed the pockets of my coat full of. He was just stuffing the last handfuls in when Esther asked what we were doing back there. He winked and said "our secret, OK?"
On another visit to check on Esther years later with her grand-niece Judy Smith, she offered us some rhubarb pie. I had never had it before, and said I would have a piece, to be polite. I can still remember that it was the most sour pie I had ever tasted, and it was many years before I ever tried rhubarb pie again!
