2.35:1 aspect ratio screens are currently the most high end screen available. A front projector is the only way to achieve this. The reason for this is that 80 percent of all movies use a 2.35:1 aspect ratio. This situation eliminates black bars from 2.35:1 DVDs. How is this achieved? Here is a 2.35:1 movie as how it is encoded on DVD: A scaler then stretches this picture upwards to once again look squished: The projector then OUTPUTS this stretched image. A lens is then place on the outside of the projector: And widens the image again to create this! Another benefit to doing this is that all the resolution of the projector is used on 2.35:1 movies, thus increasing pixel density and allowing a person to sit closer to the screen. Viola! Movie perfection! |
