WRITING

The Writing Workshop in Kindergarten:  The students have journals which they will write in everyday.

The following steps are involved in the workshop:

1.  The child draws a picture.
2.  The child explains his/her
      picture to the teacher.
3.  The child and teacher sound out
      the words to form
      a sentence/story about the
      picture.
4.  What the child writes on his/her
      journal is called "child
      writing"  and is their
       independent practice.
5.  The teacher goes over the story
      with the child showing them
      what sounds they heard and
      which ones they are missing.
     Adult writing is the guided
     practice and corrections.
6.  Mini-lessons (blends, ending
      sounds, letter formation etc.)
      are taught throughout the
      writing
session.
* At the end of the year, the students publish their own books
