THEMES FOR YEAR

   

September:  Getting to know myself, my classroom, friends, coming together as a group, classroom routines, structure and procedure.  Introduce expectations of room to children, parents and fellow staff.

October: Learning about our Community including library, supermarket, pet shop and doctor.

November: Nature:  Fall: Changing seasons, weather changes, (day, light, cold, different clothing etc.), color changes, leaves falling, animals flying south or preparing for hibernation, harvest, bird feeders, etc.

December: My family and friends.  What is a family, who is in your family?  Visits from family members to the classroom.  Friends: What are friends?  How can we be good friends? Sharing, Kindness.

January: My body, measuring my height and weight, concepts of taller, shorter, body parts.  The senses (sight, sound, taste, smell and touch).  Health and hygiene: dental, doctor, how to keep myself healthy, nutrition.

February: Nature-weather: cold, hot, snow, temperature, clothing.  Black History / Multi-Cultural.

March: Fine Arts.  A week or so on each medium:  2 dimensional: paint, chalk, ink, rubbings, prints, etc.  3 dimensional (Sculpture) Additive: clay, wood, construction, Reductive: plaster, etc. Movement: dance, athletics, music.

April through the end of year: Nature: Spring: plants, animals hatching, earth day, recycling, environment; our environment- spring cleaning, rain forest.  Day light, weather, rain, ducks, pond, animals (to include pets).
