commonly accepted as the knot with which to join two ropes together. when joining two ropes of different sizes, the larger rope should provide the bight with the bends made in the smaller.
1. form a bight in one line (on larger rope if different size)
2. pass the other through the bight. 3. take a turn around the neck of the bight. 4. tuck the end under itself so it is trapped by its own standing part.
