(cast) secures a line to a fixed object, such as a pole, when it can be dropped over at the end of the object.

1. form two bights in your hands, right over left.
2. position the left-hand bight to lie over the right-hand bight.
3. drop them over the pole to produce the complete knot.



(turned) used to secure a line to a fixed continuous object such as a railing, when the load is applied to both sides of the knot. if the load is applied to only one side, the knot will slip.

1. turn around the object to be secured, with the end positioned under the standing part.
2. form a half hitch above this turn.
3. pass the end around behind the pole and tuck it back under the hitch(X) in front of the pole.
4. pull the knot tightly.
