Charlie Babbit's business of selling exspensive cars is going down the drain. Never the less things are going pretty okay for him, he has a nice girlfriend and he's not totally broke. Then his father who he hasn't made contact with in several years has suddenly passed away leaving him a '49 Buick Roadmaster and some prize winning rose bushes. The question is, where is the $3 million dollars that Mr. Babbit was suppose to leave Charlie? It seems that the money has been put in trust.
So Charlie and his Latino girlfriend, Susanna go to a mental hospital to sleuth. There they find out that Charlie has an autistic older brother named, Raymond. Raymond as it turns out is the trustee. On wild impulse of greed Charlie more or less kidnaps Raymond and decides he wants to bring him cross country back home to LA.
Once they try to catch a flight Raymond throws a fit telling Charlie that they can't go on any of these airlines because they all have crashed. So the two brothers set off on a road trip. The thing about Raymond is that he has some exceptional talents like memorizing the phone book and counting things but he can't do simple things such as figure out if he has a dollar and he spent $0.50 how much would he have left. He also has to stick to a schedule or else he throws a fit. That's the thing that frustrates Charlie so much. Raymond has to have the maple syrup on the table before the pancakes come and must watch certain TV shows. At one point Charlie lends him Raymond a pair of briefs but he insists that his underwear must be boxer shorts bought at a K-Mart in Cincinnati. Which makes Charlie shout, "K-Mart sucks!"
By the end of the movie Charlie has a bond with Raymond and doesn't want to let him go. It seems that the only one who hasn't changed is Raymond himself. The end is sad but still satisfying and you come to love Raymond.
This movie was touching and inspirational. Both Hoffman and Cruise put in great performances and you'd have to stone hearted not to love Raymond or even Charlie for that matter.
