APTITUDE TEST IN ENGINEERING
The Graduate Aptitude test in Engineering (GATE) is an All-India Examination conducted by the seven Indian Institutes of Technology and the Indian Institute of Science , Bangalore , on behalf of the National Coordinating Board - GATE , Department of Education , Ministry of Human Resources Development(MHRD) , Government of India .

OBJECTIVES OF GATE |

GENERAL INFORMATION
Admission to Postgraduate Programmes, with MHRD Scholarship/Assistantship, in Engineering /Technology/Architecture/Pharmacy at Engineering Colleges/Institutes in the country will be open only to those who qualify through GATE.
Some Engineering Colleges/Institutes specify GATE as mandatory qualification even for admission of self-financing students to postgraduate programmes.
Candidates are required to find out the
procedure of final selection and award of scholarship/Assistantship from the
institutions to which they seek admission.
1.2 The following categories of candidates are eligible to appear for GATE 2003
a. Bachelor�s degree holders in Engineering/Technology/ Architecture/Pharmacy and those who are in the final or pre-final year of such programmes.
b. Master�s degree holders in any branch of Science/Mathematics/ Statistics/Computer Applications or equivalent and those who are in the final or the pre-final year of such programmes.
c. Candidates in the second or higher year of the Four-year Integrated Master�s degree programme (Post-B.Sc.) in Engineering/Technology or in the third or higher year of Five-year Integrated Master�s degree programme and Dual Degree programme in Engineering/Technology.
d. Candidates with qualifications obtained through examination conducted by professional societies recognized by UPSC/AICTE as equivalent to B.E./B.Tech. Those who have completed Section A or equivalent of such professional courses are also eligible.
1.3 Candidates will be required to appear in a single paper of three hours duration.
1.4 The question papers wil be in English.
1.5 The authority to declare a candidate qualified in GATE is vested with the GATE 2003
Committee.

STRUCTURE OF GATE 2003 AND GATE
RESULTS
2.1 All the
candidates for GATE 2003 will appear in a single paper of 3 hours duration
and
of 150 marks.

Papers XE and XL are of general nature and wil comprise of the following Sections:

Candidates appearing in XE or XL papers are required to answer three sections , one compulsory as mentioned above, and two others of candidate�s choice out of the sections mentioned against the respective papers.
Candidates qualified in XE or XL paper will
be further examined by the admitting institute to assess their suitability for a
particular programme.
2.3 The question paper of the GATE 2003
will be fully of objective type.
2.4 There will be negative marking for
each wrong answer. The deduction will be
25%
of the marks allotted.
