What Miracles May Come
As of late, this website has dedicated the vast majority of its content to the activities of the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society, or Traintown. In fact, since 1999, a major focus has been to showcase Nickel Plate Road Berkshire 765. However, many may have noticed that little has changed with 765s status over those years. And content, as well as interest, may have wandered a bit.
But the days of little to report are long gone now! It was reported here that the big lift was to take place. And it did! I am pleased to announce that NKP 765 was lifted on Wednesday, February 27, 2002, and that she is now resting comfortably off her feet. For the first time since at least 1958, when she was stored serviceable, the 765 will get much needed running gear repair.
Reports are that the lift was performed by Don R. Fruchey, Inc., of Fort Wayne, after a six-hour preperation and rigging. The lifting mechanism consisted of what appeared to be dual hydraulic rams on all four corners. Additionally, these rams seemed to be dual staged. That is, two telescopic extensions that would allow a compact unit to extend rather high.
And she sure did go high! The FWRHS has a beautiful photograph of the nearly sixty year old steam engine high in the air without a single wheel under her. Keep checking their website for some of these great photos!
