1. What is a Pedorthist?
A pedorthist is an individual who is trained in the manufacturing,
fitting and modification of foot appliances and footwear for
the purposes of alleviating painful or debilitating conditions
and providing assistance for abnormalities or limited actions
of the lower limb.
The pedorthist provides devices and footwear to assist in:
- Accommodation of foot deformities;
- Re-alignment of anatomical structures;
- Redistribution of external and internal
forces;
- Improvement of balance;
- Control of biomechanical function;
- Accommodation of circulatory special
requirements; and,
- Enhancement of the actions of limbs
compromised as a result of accident, congenital deformity,
neural condition, or disease.
2. What is an Orthotic?
An Orthotic or Foot orthosis is a moulded insert taken from
a three-dimensional cast for the purpose of alleviating foot
and leg pain and to provide assistance for abnormalities or
limited actions of the lower limbs.
An orthotic is not just a mirror image of your foot. Alterations
are made to the cast by the qualified Pedorthist to address
the specific needs of the patient.
3. Why custom made... I see them
in stores?
Every foot is different and every individual visiting a pedorthist
has different problems to be addressed. A custom-made orthotic
is made from a mould of your foot and customized to your specific
needs. Orthotics available through mass production cannot address
your specific needs.
4. Why is the on-site lab so important?
Foot Dynamics offers a unique service because the lab is on-site.
This allows adjustments and alterations to be made to your
orthotic while you wait! It is also
important because often orthotics are not produced by the person
who met with the patient. At Foot Dynamics you can be assured
that the person who you met with initially will have had input
into the production and adjustments to your orthotic.
5. How can I get a referral?
You can be referred by your doctor or chiropractor or you
can simply call us for an appointment.
6. Who writes the prescription?
Your doctor, chiropodist or pediatrist can write the prescription.
7. Does OHIP pay?
Our profession does not bill OHIP directly but at Foot Dynamics
we do not charge for office visits. The only cost to you is
the purchase of footwear or orthotics.
There are many extended health care plans that will cover
your costs for orthotics and possibly shoes. Check with your
provider.
Third party billing is available through Green Shield, DVA,
NIHB and some others. Just ask when you call us.
8. Why are follow up visits important?
Follow up after you receive your new orthotic will:
- ensure your complete comfort with the orthotic
- assess the effectiveness of the orthotic/ shoe system
- perform any necessary adjustments on-site, while you wait.
One year check-ups are important to ensure the orthotic continues
to function as designed. These visits are at no cost to you.
