STUDY TIPS
Before you begin, you must find the right place.
-
Select a special place to study - your room, the library - and use
it regularly
-
Work on a flat, well-lit, junk-free surface
-
Sit up straight.
-
Your study area must have good air circulation. Make sure the area
doesn't get overheated in the winter.
-
Turn off the television and radio. No one can concentrate completely
on two things at the same time.
Now for the homework.....
Consider these the minimum amount of time per day you should
set aside to do homework:
Grade 9: 30-45 minutes
Grade 10: 1 hour
Grade 11: 1.5 hours
Grade 12: 2-2.5 hours
OAC (Ontario): 2-2.5 hours (half-day timetable)
Of course, your homework load will vary depending on the courses you
take and the time of year, but try to maintain a regular schedule.
Quite frankly, don't
try to go overboard with homework the first few years of high school. Sure,
your marks count but universities and scholarships will be more concerned
about your extra-curricular activities
during these years. In your senior years, reduce your 'extra' involvement
and concentrate on your studies.
This gameplan will maximize your chances of winning scholarships
and attending the university of your choice.
HOMEWORK TIPS
-
Prioritize your work. What is more important?
My math or my art drawings?
-
If you know how to solve that type of math question,
do one or two and skip to the next section. There's no point of
wasting your valuable time on stuff that you already know. After all, answering
questions 2(a) to 2(t) is pointless if they all require the same solving
technique.
-
Look at the questions before reading the assigned
material. You'll be able to spot the answers while reading.
-
Date all your work.
-
Use neat handwriting and make use of titles.
-
Keep a table of contents at the beginning
of your notebook and keep it up-to-date!
