A typical scenic lookout.

Welcome to Mt. Glorious.

Mt Glorious is part of the Bribane Forest Park and is located about 20 minutes from the city centre. The park covers over 28000 hectares which is made up of council reserves, national parks and state forests.

The park is skirted by the Mt. Nebo Road and its extension, the Northbrook Parkway, and are well known to almost all motorcyclists that live in and around Brisbane. Consisting of 60km of winding road, it proves to be both breath taking, and challenging.

Things you should know.

Although speed limits along this road are posted at 60 and 80km/h, corners should be treated with respect, particularly when travelling through the rainforest areas. The roads here have debris over them most of the time with sticks, branches and leaf litter from the rainforest in your cornering line.

Other things you should be aware of include
  • Wild life crossing the roads, especially in the early morning and at dusk.
  • Some corners split, that is to say they have a high lane heading north and a low lane heading south or vice versa. The drop between them can be up to 1/2 metre. Note this can be a problem if you run wide ;-)
  • Watch out for slow moving cars, cars that pull out from driveways or the kerb and pedestrians around the villages. Remember this is a tourist route.
  • Your mobile phone may not work on the stretch between Mt Glorious and Splityard Dam.
This sign is enforced...

Although this is my favorite road, it is probably "the" most dangerous road in this series of articles, with sharp, off camber, down hill hair pins and lots of wash over the road, particularly after rain. I urge you to treat this stretch of bitumen with respect.

Locality map.

Getting there.

From the city centre follow Waterworks Road. When you get to The Gap the road changes names and becomes the Mt.Nebo Road.

If you need to fill up, there is a Mobile service station at The Gap on the corner of Waterworks and Settlement Roads. Alternativly there is a Caltex service station on the corner of Mt. Glorious and Mt Sampson roads at Samford.

There are no service stations on Mt. Nebo Road, the one at Mt. Nebo closed some years back (Thanks Su for the info). If you miss judge you fuel needs, it's a long push :-(.

Things to see and do.

Apart from the great ride, be it a quick fang or a scenic day trip the Brisbane Forest Park has lots to see and do.

  • The route is dotted with resturants, coffee shops, art and craft galleries with scenic lookouts that have spectacular views over Brisbane City, Samford Valley, the coastline and out to the west.
  • There are picnic and recreation areas throughout the park, with Barbecues, shelters, tables and fireplaces provided.
  • Short bushwalking trails ranging in distances from 500m to 2km in length are also on offer. These trails are well signed describing topics such as Aboriginal lifestyles, abandoned gold diggings through to local wildlife. Longer bushwalking trails are also available which can take half a day or more to complete.
  • For those of you with an inking for a bit of monkey bussiness (hey watch it!), try the Stringybark ropes adventure course. Catering towards social groups and schools there are rope, abseiling, rock climbing and canoeing courses.

  • The park has many forestry roads that have regular horse and trail rides, see the park Headquarters for more information.

Places to stay.

Guest houses as well as Bed & Breakfast type accomodation are available throughout the park, and are a great way to get away from it all... with out really getting away from it all.

Camping is permitted in the park provided you obtain a permit from the Brisbane Forest Park Headquarters first.
