The needles Lighthouse seen from the battery
The Chalk ridge running across the Southern side of the Isle of Wight ends spectacularly at the outcrop of the needles with its distinctive red and white lighthouse.
On the heights overlooking this famous scene can be seen the remains of one of the most unusual Victorian built coastal defences.
Sited at 250 ft above sea level and using the cliffs as a natural defence the Needles battery dominates the narrow approaches to the Needles channel.
In later years water level emplacements and tunnels were built and newer batteries built higher up the cliff.
The site is now owned by the National Trust and open to the public.
