Alverstoke Church tower
Alverstoke church is a normal ,relatively modern Parish church that probably unknown to its parishioners fulfils a useful role as a mariners landmark.
It is located to the West of Gosport on the Western approaches to Portsmouth. Its prominence derives from the low lying nature of the land around it rather than any great height of its structure.
The church is built on the site of the mother Church for Gosport which as completely disappeared. The current building was built by Henry Woodyer in 1865 (chancel), 1886 (Nave)
The tower was built to celebrate the coronation of king Edward VII and restoration of peace after the South African war of 1899-1902 (Boer war).
Work was started on the tower in 1904.
