Poobah's Barracuda

In late 1965 I was still living at home with my parents & was still using the family car pretty much, since whatever I had was junk & unreliable.
My mother wanted to buy a new station wagon because her job necessitated some light hauling (pharmaceutical supplies). Back then, station wagons were not at all cool, so I convinced her a Barracuda would serve the same purpose, since the rear seat folded down, providing 7 feet of space.

She bought that line & we went to a little dealer in Idlewild, Ky. and ordered the car. A month or so later our '66 Barracuda rolled in. Only options: heavy duty suspension & padded sun visors. She wouldn't budge on neat stuff like V-8, 4-spd - it didn't even have a damned radio! Sticker price was $2,600 (I've still got it).

The car sat for long periods after I moved out & Mother retired, but we never got around to getting rid of it. I tried to give it to my daughter when she was in high school in the late eighties, but she declined - it was too Geeky - she'd rather have nothing.
As time passed, the car somehow got a second lease on life.

Much of the transition has been Mel's fault! First we hopped up the slant six, then we put in a nice 340 V-8, a 4-spd transmission, & a performance rear end. A year or two later, we did it again - this time with a hotter 340. It's been a ball to drive. My daughter likes the car now! Maybe some day I'll take her for a ride. Then again, maybe not. After all - it's pretty GEEKY!
