Spirit seems to capture the best features of both Black Hole and Haunted House, yet it is a rare pin with a low production run, and it was therefore less widely known than its elder brothers. Thanks to pin-mame though Spirit has become more familiar and desirable of late and there are plenty of people waiting to get hold of one. Spirit has a very complex playfield: a real maze of lane guides and channels, but despite this the gameplay still has a "flow" to it. Spirit of course has a secondary raised playfield, that is smaller than Haunted House's attic. Access to the Sprirt playfield is via a ramp at the front and a Stargate ramp (also used on Mars god of war) at the rear. Although gravity and momentum guarantee movement between levels (no up-kickers), the upper playfield's limited accessibilty and small size mean that it plays a much smaller role than that of the Haunted House attic. Another interesting feature are the mini-flippers in the outlanes, which offer a good chance of saving the ball from draining....good but not fool-proof! Spirit also offers 2 and 3-ball multi-ball, achieved through capturing balls in the 4 captive holes around the playfield. Spirit is good to play but looks and sounds even better. It certainly is an outstanding pin to look at with its dramatic artwork and back-glass animation. Like Black Hole (also the artwork of Terry Doerzaph) Spirit has a spinning disk in the backbox animation (but with a much better motor/gearing mechanism!), and a partially mirrored single backglass. The effect is truly wonderful! |
