Joining Writer's Syndicate

Becoming a member of Writer's Syndicate is very simple. You may show up to as many (or as few) meetings as you'd like. It is not mandatory to submit anything, only that when you show up, you help look over any work that is featured that day. If you choose to submit a work, we have a rule of no more than three pages per work (longer stories may be read if sent in multiple parts, or if time is permitting.)
Submitted works for the week are read aloud on the projector. If you wish to read your own, you may. If you would prefer not to read it yourself, someone else will gladly read it for you.
Notes are honest, but not brutal. We will not outright say, "This is terrible." We aren't here to tear each other down. We will offer ideas on what can be done differently. This ranges from spelling and punctuation to re-wording things entirely. You are required to make at least one comment on each work read during the meeting, even if that comment is, "I have no notes."
Meetings for the Fall 2021 semester are on Tuesdays from 9 to 10 pm. For now, they are online. However we may change them to in-person.
The Writer's Syndicate is open to everyone, you are not required to be a CNU student to join.
Syndicate Meetings
Meetings begin with discussion over who has sent in what to be read.
Once the projector has started up, we'll begin reading in chronological order by what was submitted first.
An exception is made for someone who cannot stay for the entire meeting, in which case, their work will be read first.
After each reading, everyone will be asked for their feedback.
Any written work may be submitted for review as long as it is an original piece. This includes poetry, short stories, chapters of a series, and school assignments. We do not condone censorship, but we do have rules against blatant hate speech, and anything that would be considered NC-17.
As another rule, you may not say anything negative about your own work unless it is followed by three positive statements about said work.
We joke around a lot, and we want this to be a welcoming environment for all writers.
