The Writer's Syndicate of CNU

Welcome to CNU's Writer's Syndicate!

Christopher Newport University's own creative writing club! The Writer's Syndicate works with Currents: Literary Magazine to bring creative writers together. The purpose of the group is to encourage students to create written works and share them with the club. Giving each other notes on how to improve our skills, we help inspire one another to come up with more ideas and to always keep writing. Whether it's a short story, poetry, or even an essay for a class, we're here to build each other up!

As a creative writing club, we're interested in all writing. We'll work on poetry, prose, plays, song lyrics, graphic novels, and even school assignments and resumes. The purpose of the Writer's Syndicate is to provide a welcoming and fun atmosphere for developing our writing skills.

Our writers all come from very different genres. Some club members come in each week to recite some of their poetry for the group. We've had people come in and read scripts that they're written both for classes and for fun. Several people present novels they're in the process of writing (usually one chapter a week) and it's truly enthralling to be introduced to a new story that came from someone we know. People present short stories and little series that they've been working on. Even if it's an essay for a class, we proofread and edit anything that's presented.

During meetings, we keep open minds to anything that's read on the projector and offer notes to each other's works. We keep things pretty light, often starting the meetings with joking around before we get into it. We often have prompts every two weeks, but it is by no means mandatory to follow the prompt or even present something of yours every week.

Writer's Syndicate is open to all writers (on and off campus) and their creative works. We meet once every week to work and discuss.

We were recently featured in CNU's newspaper!

CNU newspaper article interviewing the 2022 Writer's Syndicate president, Brenna. Article reads: Writer's Syndicate Club Interview. A haven for writers on CNU. Written by JARRETT CONNOLLY.

Creative writers have always been close to one another. The major writers of the twenties and thirties like Ernest Hemmingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald famously met and talked shop at cafes in Paris. At CNU, there is a club where writers can meet and discuss what they've written. That club is the writer's Syndicate. Writer's Syndicate has been on campus for several years now, and has become a hub for creative writers. Members share their poetry, prose, and other works in the club's meetings with constructive feedback from other members. They have a prompt every meeting as a creative exercise for members. They've also participated in Open Mike nights on campus, done poetry contests, and have been a growing presence in the CNU community.

Brenna Walch has been a member of the Syndicate since her sophomore year and became the club's president this year. Walch is a very passionate writer who joined the club to improve her skills and meet other creative people. She praises the club's ability to attract all kinds of writers and majors: Bio majors, history majors, all kinds of people come to our meetings and it builds a cohesive community of writers.

Walch's biggest hope is that the club can continue to expand on campus and not just attract more aspiring writers, but make an impact on the community. She hopes that in the future they can host book drives and host D&D events to make a positive impact on CNU. When asked what she wants the club to be for creative writers on campus, Walch said that she definitely wants the club to be a beacon for writers to come and find a community to assist them in developing their own unique style, and I like to say that anyone can be a writer, it's the willingness to improve that separates good writers from great writers. New members are always welcome to come and bring their work and meet new people who really want to hear it.

If you are interested in joining Syndicate you can follow them on their Instagram @cnuwriterssyndicate or by email at writerssyndicate@cnu.edu and by attending their meetings at nine on Mondays in McMurran Hall. There will be virtual meetings over the summer on Discord so if you are interested, send an email to be added to the server.
