About Us

Founded in October 2001 by Nina Nixdorf and Claudia Schemberg Speakers' Corner Cologne is the first Engish speaking Debating Society at the University of Cologne open to students from all fields of study. As a Debating Society of a German university we are a member of the Verband der Debatierclubs an Hochschulen (VDCH), taking part in national and international tournaments.

Speakers' Corner Cologne provides a democratic forum for lively debates in English following the rules of British Parliamentary Style (BPS). Apart from advocating the freedom of speech in an unbiased exchange of views, we set great store by intellectual flexibility, teamwork and spontaneity. Taking part in formal debates helps students improve their rethoric competence, structure their ideas logically, and work efficiently under pressure of time - crucial skills needed in almost every career.

The motions proposed cover a diversity of topics ranging from political - economic to cultural and ethical. We tackle important political issues like education, globalization or party donations as well as occasional spoof or fun topics including "virginity pledges" and "guinea pig farming".
