History

Snow Moot is held each year, in late February at Mount Nemo Scout Camp in Burlington, Ontario. Mt. Nemo is owned and operated by the Hamilton Wentworth Council, part of Battlefields Region. The Moot is organised by the Hamilton Rover Round Table.

The original Camp Nemo moot was called "Snowball Moot" and was run the the 37th Hamilton Rover Crew. The first Moot was around 1970 or 1971 (if anyone remembers the exact date, please let us know.) The Moot gained in popularity throughout the 1970s, and never let up through to 1995 when the last 37th Hamilton-run Moot took place.

1996 was the only year in which Camp Nemo missed having a February Moot. In the spring of that year, the Hamilton Rover Round Table decided to organise the moot, and rename it "Snow Moot" to respect the work of the 37th Hamilton Crew, and yet honour the moot tradition.

The first Snow Moot, in February 1997 was very successful, even though no crest was issued.

1998 saw participation nearing 400, and a traditional white-on-white crest. In 1999, the crest design was changed to incorporate both black and red, and participation skyrocketed to around 550.

Bad weather and poor advertising saw a downturn in the attendance at Snow Moot 2000 - yet the 250+ campers still made Snow Moot one of the largest in the province. The moot was awarded the Roger Award for Second Best Moot in Ontario in 2000.

Promotion for Snow Moot 2001 took another step. A comprehensive advertising campaign was planned including ads in various magazines and newsletters, the new Snow Moot E-mail list, the Snow Moot web page, other Internet resources, and a mailing campaign to 14 Councils in the Boy Scouts of America. American promotion is a reaction to the BSA introducing a Venturer programme section in 1999. Since Snow Moot is one of the closest Moots to the USA, we feel that a strong American presence is possible and desirable. Participation goals for 2003 were 600.

Snow Moot 2003 proved to be a successful moot attracting over 450 people. The guarentee of snow was met with over 2 feet of fresh powder that fell over the camp on the weekend. The theme was LUMBERJACKS with events being based around the theme. Saturday night's dance was one of the best ever, thus helping snow moot obtain the Roger Award for best moot.

The theme for Snow Moot 2004 was REDNECKS, and the weekend turned out to be successful and memorable!

Suriving last year's Snow Moot one had to out play out last and out camp all other campers. From stand on a log to rowing in the mud. What a weekend.

In 2006, who could forget thier dust filled lungs with thier wild ride back to the west. Snow Moot 2006 Tin Stars and Corsets was another great year in Snow Moot history.
