There has been a lot of debate
over the last little while in Ontario about who attends moots. This
discussion in turn, has led to a whole analysis of what a moot is
traditionally for.
Moots are traditionally for Rovers, the word meaning "the meeting
of free men" and all that stuff. In many countries, moots are still
restricted to Rovers only. At Snow Moot, we appreciate the participation
of many Venturers and Rangers, and welcome them to Camp Nemo. However,
last year when we stated that everyone must be at least 16 years
old, there seemed to be some hard feelings, and some groups stayed
away altogether. So, here's an explaination. We strongly believe
that moots are a great way for younger members to get to know what
Rovering is all about. Therefore, we strongly encourage the participation
of all Venturers and Rangers, and any other Scouting members who
are nearing Rover age (i.e. 16 or over.) If there are members who
don't meet the age requirement in your group, please don't disregard
the event altogether. Instead, please encourage your senior members
(over 16) to attend.
The idea of a sponsoring Rover Crew is to form relationships between
the Rovers and the younger members. This way, retention is enhanced,
and there is an even better chance of new member recruitment. If
you have senior members that wish to attend Snow Moot and you don't
have a sponsoring Rover Crew, or if you just want to ask some more
questions about our policies, please write to us at [email protected].
