| People often ask me "Why snakes and reptiles?" to which I respond "Why not". It's hard to explain my love, devotion, and fascination to the plight of these magnificent animals. Is it the shroud of mystery that cloaks them, their raw power, the sense of fear they evoke, or the awe they inspire that attracts me to these animals? I don't know, but a certain former professor of mine has her own theory based on a Freudian Principle, but that's another story. I was born and raised around animals (No, I wasn't born in a barn), but from the day I came home from the hospital I was surrounded by pets. I was an only child so animals became my playmates, entertainment, and companions. Being the mischievous one, it didn't take long before I learned exactly which outside animals would make my mother and the prissy girls on the playground scream, and I took every opportunity I could to exploit the situation. Spiders, snakes, lizards, you name it--if I could catch it, chances are I'd be chasing people with it. Before long I began bringing home stray animals, and my mini zoo earned me the nickname "Ellie Mae". Now, I work to rehabilitate wildlife in my free time. I take in all sorts of animals ranging from ducks and raccoons to baby opossums. But, as you know, my favorite animals to own or rehabilitate are reptiles. |
