We are fortunate to have five Franciscan postulants working with the faculty as co-teachers and/or aides this year. The students are benefiting from their expertise and presence in the school and classroom. We welcome Brothers Jared Weaver, Brian Cerio, Rich Fornwalt, Nate Meckey and Rick Boland to Saint Michael�s and thank Father Shawn Roberson, director of postulants, for encouraging their participation in this ministry.

The Reading Competition Teams have been reading the required books in preparation and anticipation of the Interscholastic Reading Competition. We are grateful that Dr. Bentivegna and Mrs. Toth are once again on board to coach the teams. The Interscholastic Reading Competitions will take place on November 17th (Mid/Jr. High) and 19th (Elementary).

Haluski will be made for the Arts & Crafts Show & Sale on Thursday, October 15th, at 6:00 PM in the school hall. Many hands make light work so WE NEED YOUR HELP! Please respond generously with your time.

There will be NO SCHOOL on Friday, October 16th (Elementary Teacher Workshop at Our Lady of Loretto Community Hall).

The Arts & Crafts Show will take place on October 17th and 18th from 10:00 AM � 4:00 PM. As always, this promises to be a great event! Plan to attend and to help.
Week of October 5, 2009

The feast day of the Archangels Michael,
Gabriel and Raphael was celebrated on Tuesday, September 29th.
The faculty and students attended mass and actively participated
in the liturgy honoring our patron saint. We thank Monica Hogue
and Mary Ann Shoemaker for providing the music and leading us in
song.
-
We also thank Ann Sutton for baking �angel
shaped� sugar cookies in honor of Saint Michael. The students
enjoyed this delicious treat.
-
Once again, the Portage Rotary Club
presented the third grade students with dictionaries. We are
grateful to the members for their generosity and are certain
that the students will put their dictionaries to good use.
-
Despite the cold, rainy weather one hundred
three (103) students participated in the Walk-a-thon last
Saturday. Those in attendance walked laps, enjoyed refreshments
and spent time talking with friends. Families are asked to send
their pledges into the school office as soon as possible. Thank
you for your participation and support!

October is the month of the rosary and
students will be praying the rosary throughout the month asking
Mary for blessings on all parishioners.

Thursday marked the mid-point of the first
marking period. Mid-term grades will be sent home with the
students in grades 4 � 8 on Monday.

The Arts & Crafts Show & Sale will take
place on October 17th & 18th. We need
help in many areas, so please think about ways you can
contribute to make this fundraiser a successful one! More
information will be forthcoming.

We will be having a contest starting now until October 23rd
to see which grade turns in the most Box Tops per student. The
winning class will be awarded a �Dress Down Day�. Also,
at the end of the year we will award a pizza party to the class
with the most Box Tops collected per student for this school
year.

We are happy to announce that twenty-nine
girls in Kindergarten through eighth grade have been attending
the Cougar football games to show their support for the team.
The 2009 � 2010 Saint Michael School Cheerleaders are as
follows: Trista Bradley, Makala Little, Jessica Lee, Danielle
Pompa, Rachael Dorsch, Abby Hogue, Emmy Stevens, Kassandra Rieg,
Michaela Gresko, Stephanie Biter, Emily Zabrzeski, Allison
Williamson, Abby Williamson, Kaylee Matish, Amber Beck, Alyssa
Beiswenger, Cheyanne Beiswenger, Grace Callahan, Hope Callahan,
Sarah Cretin, Jenna Grove, Shyan Yahner � Golby, Madison Lee,
Eve Little, Sarah McElheny, Victoria McElheny, Morgan Sentz,
Nicole Seymour, Anna Wyland, and Katie Zerbee. The girls will
cheer during the remaining football games and throughout the Pee
Wee and Varsity basketball season. The girls are showing great
school spirit and we are proud of them!

We thank the coaches for working with our
cheerleaders: Kim Beck, Chrysa Wyland and Julie Little. We
appreciate their willingness to give of their time and talent.

Because the safety of our students is of
utmost importance, a bus evacuation drill was held on Friday.
All students boarded buses provided by Wilkinson�s Bus Lines
and, under the direction of the bus drivers, practiced the
proper procedure for emergency evacuations.

Our Magazine Drive ended on Friday. We
appreciate the help and interest of all who supported this
fundraiser. Thank you!

Parents and grandparents of our fourth
grade students will join us for lunch on Wednesday. We are
looking forward to spending time with them.

Thursday, October 1st, will mark
the mid-point of the first report period. Warning notices and/or
mid-term grades will be sent home with students in grades 4 � 8
on Monday, October 5th.

Ashton Hite, Rachael Dorsch, Jessica Lee,
Haley Krug, Caleb Hogue, Gina Spinner, Danielle Pompa and Brooke
Mento will make up our Celebrate Diversity Teams this year.
Student Day 1 will be held on Saturday, October 3rd,
at Penn State, Altoona. The groups will take part in discussions
of personal experiences with prejudice and will be introduced to
people who live with disabilities, hear their stories, and ask
questions of them. Mrs. Riner is the team moderator and Mrs.
Farabaugh has volunteered to assist.

Our Open House was well attended! Parents,
grandparents and former students expressed their approval and
appreciation of the changes that were made in the school over
the summer months. We thank them for being a part of this
special evening. Their attendance is indicative of their
interest in Catholic education.

We appreciate the generosity of those
families who purchased books at the Book Fair and donated them
to our school and classroom libraries. We thank Sherri and Viki
Krug, Eileen Farabaugh, Diana Gresko, Rachel Beiswenger, Crissy
Williamson and Linda Kirsch for their help in making this year�s
event a success.

Congratulations to proud parents Frank and
Becky Diehl! Addison Lynn was born on Thursday, September 10th.
She is welcomed by her brother Brandon. All are adapting well to
the new addition.

Students have been busy getting pledges

The Pee Wee
football season kicked off last Saturday at Point Stadium in
Johnstown. The Cougars played their first game against Saint
Benedict�s, Johnstown at 11:00 AM. The Cougars gave their best
effort and won the game! Team members include: Jeffrey Barnett,
Matthew Bohrer, Zachary Bohrer, Nathan Butterbaugh, Nathan
Callahan, Cole Crusciel, Drew Crusciel, Brandon Diehl, Drake
Diehl, Craig Eckenrode, Chad Fitzsimmons, Shane Grove, Matthew
Hammond, Nick Hite, Mitchell Hogue, Garrett Krug, Justin Krug,
Nate Krug, Alex Lee, Luke Mento, Clinton Price, Shane Seymour,
Kase Spielvogle and Christian Stoltz. We thank our coaches for
working with the team and preparing the players for the games.
Our first home game will be played Saturday, September 19th,
against Saint Andrew�s at St. Francis University�s DeGol Field
at 2:00 pm. Wear your green and gold and plan to attend and
support the Cougars!

Saint Michael�s
annual Open House will be held on Monday, September 14th,
at 6:30 PM. Parents, prospective parents, grandparents and
interested parishioners are invited to attend. We hope to see

President Obama will address the children of the United States.
It is our intention to provide the students in Grades 3 through
8 the opportunity to listen to his web cast speech. If you
do not want your child to view the address, please complete

We thank
the many members of our school family who helped in cleaning,
updating and beautifying our school over the summer months. We
are thrilled with the changes that have occurred and are anxious
to begin, again, to work together in educating our parish
children. The faculty, students and parents are ready to meet
the new challenges the school year is sure to bring!

Week of August 31, 2009

Saint Michael School reopens on Monday,
August 31st. School hours are again 8:25 AM to 2:40
PM, with dismissal at 2:50 PM. All students will have full day
sessions beginning the first day. Please check bus route
schedules in the local newspapers.

The opening of the school year will be
celebrated with our annual �Back to School Picnic.� Grilled hot
dogs, watermelon, carrot sticks and dip, an ice cream sundae bar
and a cold drink will be the menu for the day. Lunch will cost
$1.00. An extended recess will follow to give the students an
opportunity to play or spend time talking with friends.

Saint Michael School�s lunch program will
once again operate under the direction of Mrs. Shelly Eckenrode.
Through this program, our students will receive a delicious,
well-balanced, nutritious meal. Lunch may be purchased for $2.25
or milk will be available for 35 cents.

Volunteers are still needed for the lunch
program for this school year. Duties will include serving food,
doing dishes, cleaning tables and sweeping the cafeteria. Recess
moms and dads are also needed. If you are able to volunteer for
a couple of hours one day a week, or every other week, please
