October 2006 Newsletter

Congratulations to Kellsie Hodges who will be serving as this years club President. If anyone is interested in holding an office, please let me know. Gabrielle is our club photographer. We covered a lot of things at the last meeting and there are some important dates and times.

First on the list is the date change for the Achievement Night. It will be October 4th at 7 p.m. at the Episcopal Church across from the 4-H Office. This is a family event and dinner will be provided. All of our members are going to be honored in some way so please attend if at all possible. Our club will be leading the 4-H Pledge. This is a fun event for all. I think its at 7, but Ill double check. If it isnt, Ill contact you with the correct time.

On Friday, September 29th from 6 to 7 p.m. we will be meeting at Kings to set up our window display for Breyer Day. Each member should bring something simple for the display and we will be using items from the store to complete the display.

Ill be doing a Voice of the Valley on October 2nd at 9:30 a.m. if any of the girls want to join me that would be great.

On Friday, October 6th I will be setting up for the big day. If anyone could come help for a while, that would be appreciated. We need to put tarps on the floor, set and cover tables and set up the activities area. Ill be there from about 5 to 6 p.m.

October 7th, the big day, Breyer Fun Day! Members should plan to arrive about 9:30 a.m. so we can get organized. There are some things that need to be done like signing in contest entries, collecting the fee for the stablemate painting, selling raffle tickets and other odd jobs. Parental help would be appreciated on this day also. Since we will be painting, members are encouraged to wear old clothes or a cover shirt of some type. Diane will be coming from Challis and we could use help with the younger participants while they are painting. We are also having a coloring contest for all ages including adults and the Halloween model horse costume contest. This can be a complete scene or just a costume for the model. This is also open to adults. Members are encouraged to enter both contests but its not mandatory, just fun. Judging for the models will be by Peoples Choice. Pictures for the coloring contest can be picked up and delivered to Kings. Ill try to keep a supply of entries at Kings but photocopies can be used. Please encourage all your family members and neighbors to enter. Entries can be dropped off at any time before 5 p.m. on October 6th at Kings. Come on parents, heres a challenge; lets see what you can do!

For Breyer Day, the main event will be the stablemate painting but there will be some games, raffles and the two contests. Well even have the PAL costume. Remember, for members to earn their Breyer Day model, they need to help with the event in some way. The models this year should be about $16 each and there will be extras to purchase at this price for Breyer Day only.

If anyone would like to bring simple munchies for that day it would be appreciated. Im not sure how many to plan for but last year there were about 25 people throughout the day. Thats about all I can think of for Breyer Day.

OTHER TOPICS: During the meeting we discussed other activities. We are going to try and have a float for the Parade of Lights parade thats the Friday after Thanksgiving. Depending on whos in town we will plan for this. We will need some one who can hook up the lights and a generator or battery. We have a 20-foot flatbed trailer, but I dont know a thing about the lights. Heres a good job for any dads! Ill also see if we can borrow the big mule from A-Z.

BAKE SALE: Everyone was excited about doing the bake sale again. Its tentatively set for December 16th at Kings. I need to reconfirm this date. This is our biggest fundraiser and we have such great bakers in our group its interesting to see what they make.

ABACO BARB YOUTH PROJECT: I heard from Mimi, to date, the proceeds from Breyer for the sale of the Capella model is about $11,000. Youth participation in the Youth Project have raised $815 this year and we have sent in just over $100 from our ink cartridge recycling efforts.

PHOTO SHOW WITH CANADA 4-H CLUB: This winter we will be doing some photo shows with some 4-H model horse youth in Canada. Well send our photos for them to judge and they will send us theirs. It should be an interesting exchange.

OTHER 4-H PROJECTS: If your daughter would like to do a self-determined or other type of self-directed project, they can go through this club instead of having to go to two different clubs. This way they only have to do one community service project and fundraiser but they have to do their demonstrations for each project at our club. This is a bit confusing so if you have any questions please let me know.

DEMONSTRATIONS: Please encourage your daughter to get her demonstration done early this year. They need to be done before the model horse show that will be in late April or early May. They also need to do a book or magazine article report.

FLICKA MOVIE: The new Flicka movie will be out in October and we were discussing going as a group but with each member paying their own way.

WHITEWATER FUN SHOW: On October 21st, Whitewater will host another fun show and this time they will have two Halloween Costume classes, one for riders and the other for leadline. They have also added a canine costume class. This should be a really fun event so start thinking of a costume for yourself and your horse and dog.

INK CARTRIDGES & POP TOPS: If you know anyone who might let us put out a bin, please let me know.

WEBSITES OF INTEREST: This is the site of the Calgary 4-H Southpaws Multi-Club that we will be photo showing with. If you think our record books are hard, you should see what they are doing. Its really interesting. Calgary 4-H Southpaws Multi-Club

This site has some great ideas and tips on model showing and model tack fitting. Oh Joy Farms

Also, dont forget to check out our club site. Juanita has done an awesome job on it and there is all kinds of information and photos.Salmon Model Horse 4-H Club
