October 2005 Newsletter

Wow, this year went fast. So much has happened in the past few weeks. The Breyer Day went well and we have been invited to do it again next year. There were about ten youth participating in the stablemate painting and a handful in the costume contest. It looks like we will be gaining several new members. We had numerous comments on the window display and the club displays during the event. I was very proud of how each member conducted themselves. The three members that helped plan and host the event received their Special Edition Tristan models. They set up the window display, worked with event participants, sold candy bars and bookmarks, and helped clean up after the event.

During the 4-H Achievement Night club members received their project completion stickers and their Abaco Barb Youth Project certificates. We also have several youth working on their ABYProjects. One gal is hosting a model horse photo show. Another did an interesting report for one of her school classes.

Diane Fisher and I just returned from the State Leaders Forum. We heard about two other new model horse 4-H groups in Idaho so we will be in contact with them. Our display looked great. Between the two of us, we had 16 feet of display area, which was filled with posters, models and displays. We answered tons of questions about the project and received lots of positive comments. In March, Diane will be teaching a class on how to start a model club at the Regional Leaders Forum in Salt Lake. We will also have a display there.

Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, November 16th at the Commissioners Office from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Everyone will need to bring their models. New members will be making model horse blankets and the others can start on their Arabian or Knight costumes. If they have special materials for the costumes, they need to bring that also. I will have other supplies and materials. We will also be discussing what the project is about and handing out the dreaded record books and check-off lists. Since we are a small club, we dont have officers but Kelsey Austin is willing to try being our club secretary.

Since we will have several new members, there will be a tack-making day from 10 to 2 on Saturday, November 26th. This is during Thanksgiving break and I realize not everyone will be in town. Its not an official meeting but a chance for those that are here to make Western saddles. I will need to know ahead of time who will be attending so I can get the supplies. I was hoping to do this closer to Christmas so parents could have some time alone to shop, but the room was already reserved.

Our traditional club bake sale will be on Saturday, December 10th at Kings from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is a great fund-raiser and a lot of fun. Our members are such great cooks! We will also be selecting a gift for the Christmas is Sharing program and making thank-you goodie trays for Kings, KSRA, the Recorder Herald and other club supporters.

Our December meeting will be on the 21st - Wednesday- from 1:30 to 4 at the Commissioners Office. We will have a small Christmas party and probably make pine centerpiece baskets for the Discovery Care Center. This has been a well-received project in the past.

As for the pop-top collecting, we have about 6 gallons worth of tops to be sent in. Its time to start collecting for this year. We received a lot from the VFW Auxiliary, Marie Freitas and from Mr. Ellis who lives out of state and sends us tops each year. The tops are sent to the Boise Ronald McDonald House. Please ask all your friends to save their tops for us.

Mimi with the Abaco Horses has also started a new project to collect used ink cartridges and cell phones. She sent the information and asked if we could collect locally. So please ask your friends if they have any of these items.

We also have delicious 4-H chocolate candy bars for sale. They are $1 each. They have been a big hit and easy way for the club to raise funds.

I think thats all for right now. If you have any questions about the above events, please call me ASAP.
