March 2007 Newsletter

Our February meeting was a busy one. Sharon Jakovac donated about a dozen models and gave a model to each member. Mary gave her demonstration on how to select a model for showing and we started on bridles. Since time was short, we didnt have an official business meeting but just discussed the up-coming show and what we are going to do at 4-H Fun Night. Copies of the Horse Illustrated article on the Abaco Barbs were passed out. Members need to read this before the next meeting. The younger members may need help with the article. They also need to select one interesting fact they learned about the horses to discuss at the next meeting.

NEXT MEETING:
Our next meeting will on friday, March 9th from 1 to 4 p.m. at the library. We will again be discussing the model show, which will be on May 11th. We will also be discussing the Horse Illustrated article on the Abaco Barbs. This will be for the reading requirement and will help provide information for the requirement that each member must tell someone about the Abaco Barb horses.

OTHER TOPICS:
Club Model Horse Show: Our club model show will be on Friday, May 11th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Everyone needs to participate in this event to complete their project. The club will supply lunch. At the March meeting, we will be discussing the class list and will be making plans as to what we are going to do.

4-H Promotion week & sign up night: This will be the week of March 3rd - 8th. The club will have some kind of display at the 4-H Fun Night on Thursday, March 8th at 7 p.m. at the High School and will need members to help set it up and man it. They can also bring a model for our display booth and we will be hosting a coloring contest. Members need to sign up that night or beforehand and pay their $5 membership fee. The fee covers all regular 4-H clubs and projects except project camp or projects in a day. This includes the 4-H horse project insurance. Everyone must be signed up and the fees paid by April 1st. We also have a meeting on Friday, March 9th from 1 to 4 p.m.

CANDY BARS:
We can sell the candy on Friday at the horse sale and we can meet one day and sell it in town. The candy bars are $1 each. We can also sell candy at sign-up night. This is a big fundraiser for our club, especially since we try to purchase a model for each member at Breyer Day.

DEMONSTRATIONS:
So far, only Aspen and Mary have done their demonstrations. Gabrielle and Nicole are scheduled for the March meeting. Please encourage your daughter to get her demonstration done early this year. They need to be done before the model horse show that will be in May. I will be scheduling them at this meeting if no one offers to do them. If you have questions about this, please call me. For those that dont do their demonstrations before the May meeting, they will be assigned an impromptu topic at the show.

HORSE CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS:
Members of the model club are eligible to attend the 4-H Horse Camp. There is a partial scholarship available to anyone who works during the horse sale. For more information, contact Katie or Shannon at the 4-H Office.

IDAHO HORSE OF THE YEAR:
Jim Wilson, an Extension Educator from northern Idaho confirmed the other day that all the legal papers are signed and the Idaho Horse of the Year program is official. The entry forms are now ready. You can get a copy from me or on our website. Deadline is MAY 1st, 2007. No late entries accepted.

RECYCLING PROJECTS:
I just sent out a box of cartridges and theres already another box about ready to go. We will no longer be accepting cell phones. To date we have raised $163.50 for the Abaco Barb horses through this program. Dont forget to bring in your pop-tops, also.

NEW EXTENSION OFFICE WEBSITE:
The Lemhi County Extension Office now has its own website that will have all kinds of information on Extension topics and the 4-H program in general. Katie will be putting all 4-H news, events, dates, and forms on the site. The web address is http://extension.ag.uidaho.edu/lemhi/

Thats all I can think of for now. If you have any questions, please call me.

If anyone can bring refreshments to the meetings, it would be appreciated. We would need enough for at least 12 people.
