July 2007 Newsletter

NEXT MEETING:
Our next meeting will be on Friday, July 13th from 10 to noon at the library. We will be working on our Native American costumes for our fair display and everyone needs to bring their supplies and model. If you have any beads, suede scraps, small feathers, or other items to share that would be helpful. At this meeting we will be discussing the displays. As always, for protection, there will be fish tanks to put the displays in. If you have any old tanks that would be very helpful. The displays we are doing will be judged at the fair.

During this meeting we will also be judging a photo show for the Challis Hot Wheels 4-H Club so they can have the results back for their fair the end of July.

I will also be handing out new record books and will be sending the old ones home with a list of things we have done and when. Please have your daughter work on them at home, especially her story. The books will be due at the end of the August meeting so they need to be worked on and brought back. At the August meeting I will have covers, stuff to decorate the photo pages and other things that can be added to the books. PARENTS MUST ALSO SIGN THE BOOK!!!

If your daughter wants to do the record book on the computer, this will give her time to do it. Some members like the computer, others dont. Its your choice but remember, there is NO SPELL CHECK in the record book program so please have your daughter double check all spelling as this is an important part of the book. Judges are more critical of this when the computer is used instead of being handwritten.

I will have an updated list for each member of what we did. Everyone has done their demonstrations and a few have some simple check-offs to do. For the requirement to tell someone about the Abaco Barbs, at the August meeting we are going to write letters to the Kentucky Horse Park asking them to include information about the Abaco Barbs on their website for the Horses of the World listing. Also, each member needs to select one model for her project model. There is a separate page for information and a photo of that model. Please have your daughter bring that model to the next meeting also so I can take a photo of it if she doesnt already have one selected.

MISSOULA MODEL SHOW:
Mary and her sister, Hannah, participated in the novice classes and both did an outstanding job. The judge was very impressed with their showmanship skills, description cards and set-ups. Diane and I were very proud of all the positive compliments they received from the judge and upper-level exhibitors as well as the inquiries into the 4-H Model Horse Project. They made the club and entire 4-H Model Horse Project look very good!!! Thank you girls.

CANDY BARS:
We discussed doing a walk-through-town candy sale so the date for that has been set for July 19th from 10 to 11 a.m. The candy sales are important because during the Breyer Fun Day, each member helping with the event receives a special Breyer Day model. The fee for the models comes from the club funds. Funds also cover pizzas and lunches at the all day events. Currently no club funds are used for project supplies, film or film developing, postage for newsletters, club donated raffle baskets for other events, snacks, drinks or other supplies.

RECYCLING PROJECTS:
We will no longer be accepting cell phones. To date we have raised $310.00 for the horses through this program. We now have collection bins at KSRA, Salmon Internet, the Salmon and Custer 4-H Offices, and the Salmon Library. Dont forget to bring in your pop-tops, also. We will have collection bins at the Lemhi and Custer Fairs.

OTHER TOPICS:
Club banner: Thank-you Diane for sewing down the letters and edging on our club banner!

New models in at Kings: A whole lot of new models and Breyer products just arrived at Kings. Check them out!!

River of No Return Horse Sale: There might be a possibility we can sell candy bars at the River of no Return Horse Sale Saturday, July 14th from noon to 2 p.m. Ill know more in a few days.

Breyer Day events at Montana Quality Supply stores: The Quality Supply Stores in Hamilton, Dillon and Missoula will be hosting Breyer Day events on July 28th for anyone interested n attending. Call Andrea at 406-549-1458 for details. I dont know what they have planned but it should be fun.

Model show certificates: Mary B. was the recipient of the first Salmon Model Horse 4-H Club sponsored high scoring 4-H award at the Missoula 5 Valley show.

Amanda G. from our sister club, the Calgary 4-H Southpaws in Canada, received a certificate at the Gold Diggers Live 2007 show in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Congratulations girls!!!

There were no 4-H exhibitors at the NW Expo so Juanita is holding the certificate for next year. Requests have been coming in for certificates, including the Rose City Live Show being held this September in Portland, Oregon.

Family Night At the Lemhi County Fair: The fair will be here before you know it; fair week is August 18th26th. On Wednesday evening, from 5 to 9 p.m. there will be special family-oriented events and the alcohol sales will be confined to the grandstands and select areas only. This is a very special project being organized by Katie Hoffman and something that is much needed. To help support her efforts, Kris Hamblins Master Gardener Club and our club will be having carnival-style booths and will be located next to each other. Kris is doing a pick the duck type booth and we will have a frog toss one. This is a club fundraising project so members are encouraged to come by and help for a while.

LEMHI COUNTY EXTENSION OFFICE WEBSITE: http://extension.ag.uidaho.edu/lemhi/ or Phone: 756-2824.

Thats all I can think of for now. If you have any questions, please call me.

If anyone can bring refreshments to the meetings, it would be appreciated. We would need enough for at least 12 people. Please let me know before the meeting if you can do this.
