July 2006 Newsletter

Our June meeting was really productive. We have a new member, Shaylee Hilton. The international jumps were really neat and creative. Kelsey and Mary designed a neat course with them. If your daughter hasnt turned hers in yet, she needs to bring it to this months meeting which will be on July 20 - at the library basement from 9 a.m. till noon. This is basically our last general meeting before fair.

At the August 10th meeting, which is set for the same time and location, we will be finishing up record books and they should be turned in at the end of that meeting. I will have fresh copies of the books to hand out at this meeting. Members have been working on their books all year and will just need to neatly copy the information into their fresh books. At the August meeting, I will have stuff for them to do their photo pages. Please encourage your daughters to work on re-entering the information into the new books at home. They also need to write their 4-H story. This is a very important part of their record book and it would be helpful if you could help them write it at home, or at least do a rough draft of the story so it can be recopied during the meeting. Im enclosing a copy of the judges score sheet so you know what is expected of the books.

Also, any member that needs to do their book or article report should get that done at this meeting. Demonstrations need to be finished at this meeting, also. We will also be working on some of the remaining check-off requirements and up-dating the record books as well as discussing our fair display. June/July have been busy months so we will also be discussing the various activities everyone had attended like the 4-H horseshow, rodeo camp and the Salmon River Days playday. We are tentatively planning to have a short packing clinic at the August meeting so members can try their hand at packing. Therefore, members need to bring their models so we can make packing equipment for them.

AUGUST MEETING: I hope to have the schedule for our time at the pop booth and other fair related information. Dont forget the speech and demonstration contest during fair. Weve added Cowboy Poetry.

PHOTO SHOW: Ill have the results of the Abaco Barb photo show at this meeting. The club was well represented and everyone did really well. Well be sending the photos on to other places as soon as we get them reorganized.

STATE PHOTO CONTEST: I sent in photos taken by Mary, Kelsey and Gabrielle for the state 4-H photo contest. We should have the results in November during the State Leaders Forum in Boise.

BREYER DAY: The paperwork has been received for our Breyer Day, October 7th, so we will be discussing this event during the next few months so we can get the advertising out. I also sent 4-H model club information flyers to Lee Prigge and Danielle Keller and they will be passing out the flyers at Breyerfest in Kentucky the end of this month. The flyer has information on the 4-H model horse project, our website and information on the Abaco Barb Youth Project. We need to come up with some promotional flyers for fair.

SALMON RIVER DAYS: We need to decide if we want to do a float or have a cookie and cupcake bakesale during the holiday. Please let your daughter know if you have plans that weekend or if she will be available to participate in a club activity. I have access to a flatbed for the parade if we decide to do that. We need to decide this at the next meeting.

FAIR: For the fair, I like to have all members models either in the club display case or covered with large fish tanks for protection. Terri at Salmon Art Works recently donated two tanks so we now have 5 tanks. We will be discussing our fair displays at the next two meetings. Dont forget the speech and demonstration contest during fair. Weve added Cowboy Poetry.

PHOTO SHOW: I sent our photos off to Danielles benefit photo show for the Abaco Barbs. When they come back, they will be sent to another show. For those who dont have photos, we will be taking them at the June meeting so bring your models. You can use my tack if you need it.

ABACO BARB YOUTH PROJECT: We have a new certificate recipient, 12 year old Amanda Bilow from Wyoming, Delaware. She did her science report on the Abaco Barbs and received an A on her project. Another gal is considering the Abaco Barbs as her topic for her state 4-H Speech Contest.

CLUB FUNDS: We need to come up with some simple fund-raising ideas for fair since the girls want to use club money to purchase their Breyerday model. Last year the models were about $20 each. These are special run models sold only at Breyerday events. For a member to be able to use the club funds for their model, they need to be active in the club since the May meeting and must take part in helping plan, promote and participate at our Breyerday as well as club events and activities at fair.

Also, in October, the horse movie Flicka, will be coming out and I think the girls wanted to use club funds to attend that as a group. If you have any ideas for fund-raising, please let me know.

MEETING DAYS: School will be starting soon and I need to know what day would be good for meetings so I can arrange for a meeting room. Im game to have the meetings on Fridays since I believe the schools will be doing the 4-day week and Friday will be their day off. If we use this day, we would have more time to make tack and obstacles as well as do photo shoots and have guest speakers. Im hoping to have someone come in and talk about driving and western style classes and activities. I need to know ASAP on this subject.

CLUB TEE SHIRTS: Some of the members already have club shirts. If your daughter would like one, I can have more of them made up. The cost is only $10. The shirts are teal green and have the club logo embroidered on the left front pocket area. Please let me know if you are interested in a shirt.

I think thats all for right now, our big push for the next two meetings will be record books and stuff for the fair. If you have any questions about the above events, please call me ASAP.

Dont forget to bring in any ink cartridges, cell phones or pop-tops for our service projects. Hopefully we will soon have collection containers at various locations and a collection box for the fair.
