January 2005 Newsletter

Happy New Year!! Cant believe the club is starting its third year. Weve accomplished so much already and things are looking great for this coming year. First on the agenda is the English day camp on Saturday, Jan. 8th from 10 to 4 at the Library basement. This will be a busy day with lots of activities scheduled.  Hopefully the roads will be clear and Diane Fisher will be coming up. Shes working on a very ambitious project which weve be discussing for the past few years, making a video of what a model horse club is all about. So, you guessed it, she will be taking photos of our English saddle making project and other things to include in the video. So, can you please have your daughters wear shirts without any logos or pictures on them? They shouldnt wear good shirts since we will be doing craft projects, but it would look nicer if they didnt have any logos since we will be taking a variety of still photos for the video.

Also were planning on having Russ Tippett, the local Stubben English saddle representative, come to discuss English saddles and English style riding events. He will be there early in the meeting so the girls can see first-hand what types of saddles they will be making. Well also be doing an English saddle parts hand-out sheet.

This will be a busy day as well have Russ talk first, then well be making English saddles and bridles and some type of jump. After that, well set up photo scenes for the photo show. Im counting on the older girls to help our newer members with this. I will bring the cameras and film. Around noon we will have a pizza lunch. If anyone would like to supply some drinks, that would be appreciated. The cost of the pizza will come out of the club funds. At some point in the day, we may be walking over to A-Z to take a few photos for the video of the members visiting a tack store. So please be aware that we will be leaving the library for a short time.

So, what do your daughters need to bring? First, they need a model; hopefully it will be the one they are using for their project. It should be walking, trotting, cantering or standing. No rearing or bucking models. They should bring scissors and, if they have any tack making supplies, bring them also. They should bring any items they have for making an English scene and a halter for their model if they have it so we can do some halter photos if we have time. For the new members, dont panic, Ill have things you can use and some photos that will give you ideas of what to do. If you have any questions, please dont hesitate to call me.

Since its the New Year, we will be discussing the goals section of our record books, so please encourage your daughter to be thinking about what they want to accomplish year. It helps if they have a specific goal instead of something general like learn about model horses. Try something like I would like to learn about the various types of model horses or I would like to learn about the different types of English riding, or I would like to learn how to set up a photo shoot scene or make a halter for my model. This type of specific goal is easier to accomplish than a broad topic.

Our last meeting went great. Jessica, Hannah and Mary received their Capella models from Breyer® and I took photos for some promotional articles, one of which was in the December 23, 2004 issue of the Recorder Herald®. The girls also made horseshoe thank-you gifts and several lovely holiday baskets which they later delivered to the Discovery Care Center.

The Bake Sale went well. With the extra goodies, we made up goodie trays for the Library staff, Recorder Herald, KSRA and A-Z to thank them for helping us throughout the year. The trays were well received by all. Id like to thank everyone who made goodies for the sale. The girls did a good job and as always, I was very proud of the way they conducted themselves. They also selected a card from the Christmas is Sharing tree and with the bake sale funds, purchased an art supply set for their recipient. We also had a group photo with Santa.

Dont forget, your daughter needs to get her demonstration done and she needs to give two reports either on a book, magazine or video. Id like to get the demonstrations done as soon as possible and no later than June so we can be pretty well wrapped-up before horse and dog 4-H really starts. There are plenty of things the girls can do now to finish their requirements. One way to encourage this is to have them combine it with a school project. Last year Jessica did her Abaco Barb illustrated talk for one of her classes, then did it at the Fair. Horses can be used in a variety of classes, English, history, geography, and science; it just takes a little creativity.

Our February meeting is tentatively set for the 16th at the Commissioners Office. I have to double check on this. In March, we will be combining our club meeting with the Leaders Training meeting on Saturday, March 12th and the 4-H Expo Night on Wednesday March 16th at the High School. The Leaders Training topic will be judging and there will be several classes on how to judge various things as well as how 4-H projects are judged. Our members will be helping with this event so they can learn more about the hows and whys of judging. Parents are also encouraged to participate in this event and if you know anyone who would be interested in judging projects at the fair, please encourage them to attend. Its hard finding project judges so the 4-H Office is offering this district-wide event so folks can learn more about the 4-H judging process and what it takes to be a project judge. This is a great way for senior community members to share their knowledge with the youth. Judging at the fair is a fun and challenging opportunity. If you know any one interested, please have them contact the 4-H Office.

For the Expo Night, which is also the general 4-H sign-up night, we will have a club display with the members models and they should be on hand to answer questions about the club. Its a fun event and helps encourages members to talk to others about what they do with the club.

I turned in the pop-tops for this year. They filled two five gallon pails and Jessica brought enough to fill a gallon jug. So, the jugs are empty and ready for this years collection.

As for the Abaco Barb Project, things are starting to roll. I heard from the National 4-H Office and they want an article for their national publication and I wrote an article for Breyer's "Just About Horses."® The model should be out in January 2005, but already Mimi, the gal in charge of the horses, has had several nice donations from folks in other countries. Shes really excited about the girls accomplishments and cant thank them enough. Theres still no word if any of the mares are in foal, the vet wouldnt check them till late April. Breyer® is asking their retailers to host a Breyer® Day at their business and donate some of the proceeds to the Abaco Barbs. Bob Enderton at Kings is interested in doing something here and we would be in charge of the event.

So, things are moving along. This is starting to look like a really event filled year. If you have any questions, please call me at 756-3182 or e-mail me at [email protected]
