February 2007 Newsletter

Wow, our January meeting went really well. The girls took photos and made tack, Aspen gave her demonstration on the Hagerman Horses and Dallas Dupree spoke about the Native American horses. I cant believe how much we accomplished that day.

NEXT MEETING:
Our next meeting will on Saturday, February 24th from 10 a.m. to noon at the Commissioners Annex. We will be making bridles and discussing the model show. This will be a tack-making meeting only though we will have a special guest who will have a really neat surprise for all members who attend. So be there early!!

I know our dates have been a bit confusing this year but Ive had two trips and Joe is scheduled for a hospital stay in Montana in March so Im just trying to get everything covered. We still need to set a date for the model show so I can get a judge. May is High School rodeo and then theres dance and sports schedules. Please let me know asap if theres something you have scheduled. We could go as late as June but then other things will be happening. Id also like to have a just for fun meeting during spring break to make tack, props and do photos and stuff but I need to know who will be here and whos going out of town.

Members also need to do some of the stuff on their checklists. Everyone has been great about working on their record books a litter bit at each meeting but there are some things on their checklists they need to do on their own, like read a book and do their demonstration as well as tell someone about the Abaco Barb horses.

HORSE AFFAIRS:
Diane and I will be at Horse Affairs in Boise February 14th 19th. I will get the photos from the January meeting developed then. Hopefully we will meet with some of the members of the Treasure Valley Model Horse Club and see what their schedule is.

OTHER TOPICS:

4-H PROMOTION WEEK
4-H Promotion week & sign up night is scheduled for March 3rd-9th. Im not sure what night the sign-up and expo are but the club will have some kind of display and we will need members to help set it up and man it. Each member needs to sign up that night or beforehand, and pay their $7 membership fee. This includes the $2 for 4-H horse project insurance.

CANDY BARS:
The girls wanted to try selling candy again this year and the candy has arrived. Those who werent at the bake sale need to do a fundraiser and this is the perfect opportunity. We can sell the candy on Friday at the horse sale and we can meet one day and sell it in town. The candy bars are $1 each. We can also sell candy at sign-up night.

DEMONSTRATIONS:
Please encourage your daughter to get her demonstration done early this year. They need to be done before the model horse show that will be in late April or early May. They also need to do a book, movie or magazine article report. I will be scheduling them at this meeting if no one offers to do them. Gabbie and Nicole have volunteered to do their demonstrations at the February meeting. If you have questions about this, please call me.

HORSE CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS:
Members of the model club are eligible to attend the 4-H Horse Camp. There is a partial scholarship available to anyone who works during the horse sale. For more information, contact Katie or Shannon at the 4-H Office.

IDAHO HORSE OF THE YEAR:
Jim Wilson, an Extension Educator from northern Idaho confirmed the other day that all the legal papers are signed and the Idaho Horse of the Year program is official. We are tweaking the entry forms now and should have everything ready shortly. For information on this project, check out our website.

RECYCLING PROJECTS:
We received another check for $35 for the ink cartridges. That was forwarded on to Mimi for the horses. Theres already another box about ready to ship out. We will no longer be accepting cell phones as they are too hard to figure out what is and isnt accepted and many of the models we received are already out-dated. Dont forget to bring in your pop-tops, also.

NEW EXTENSION OFFICE WEBSITE:
The Lemhi County Extension Office now has its own website that will have all kinds of information on Extension topics and the 4-H program in general. The web address is http://extension.ag.uidaho.edu/lemhi/

Thats all I can think of for now. If you have any questions, please call me.

If anyone can bring refreshments to the meetings, it would be appreciated. We would need enough for at least 12 people.
