April 2005 Newsletter

Looks like April is going to be a busy month for the club. Well kick it off with the Salmon Select Horse Sale on Saturday, April 16th. This will be a big day and we have lots to do. Well meet at the fairgrounds from 9 a.m. to noon. During that time we will have a table set up with our club display to promote the Abaco Barb horses and hopefully sell some Abaco Barb bookmarks. We also have about 60 4-H candy bars to sell and for a community service, we will be signing up folks for the Lemhi/Custer County Equine Resource List. At last months meeting the girls made jugs to collect pop tops and well be putting them around the fairgrounds also. And, just to make things really busy, I have a scavenger hunt list planned. Again, Ill be taking photos of the sale so I need to be done by noon. For this event, I need to go to work right away so as soon as we dismiss at noon, I will not be able to watch after your daughter. Im just letting you know that after noon, I cant be responsible for your daughter as the official part of the 4-H meeting will be over.

Ill also be at the fairgrounds on Friday about 4 p.m. if anyone wants to come out and sell candy bars or check things out during the mule sale. Im doing photos there also but will be around beforehand. The Backcountry Horsemen usually have a hands-on packing demonstration thats fun to do.

Our April meeting will be on the 20th at the Commissioners Annex from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Well be discussing the model show and entering the models for the show. Therefore, members should know by that time what models they will be using. Im enclosing the class list. Parents, please go over this with your daughter and help her decide what shes going to do. Id also like to work on record books and hopefully have the demonstrations done. Id like to get the Model Horse stuff pretty much finished before the other clubs get busy. Please encourage your daughter to do her demonstration and book and video reports. Enclosed is a list of everything your daughter has done and what we did as a club. This information should help your daughter with her record book and the information needs to be recorded in her own words, not copied from the list. We will be working on a draft copy of the record book and I will have new copies at the June meeting which should be neatly filled out and handed in one week before fair.

Our Model Show will be on Saturday, April 30th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the library. This is an important part of the project as it is basically our Fair Horse Show and the highlight of the project. Members must attend to complete their project or make arrangements to participate in some type of model prior to fair!   Enclosed is a copy of the show list and the rules we will be following. If you have questions, DONT HESITATE, PLEASE ASK!!!!! Members will be required to wear a Western style long-sleeved shirt and neat jeans. If they dont, they will be heavily penalized during the show and will not be eligible to receive a blue ribbon for their over-all showmanship efforts. This doesnt mean they need to wear a $50 show shirt. The club will purchase a Subway sub for lunch for the show exhibitors and those helping with the show. If youre bringing friends or relatives, please have them bring a lunch or purchase their own sandwich. We will need someone to get the sub for us around noon. If you can provide drinks or snacks that would be appreciated. Im not sure if the show will go till 4 p.m., it just depends on how many entries we have. Members of the Custer County Hot Wheels Model Horse 4-H Club have also been invited. Since the show registration deadline is April 20th, I should have a better idea of the time by our next meeting.

Good news! As of now, thanks to Juanita Snyder in Oregon, we now have an official Salmon Model Horse 4-H Club website! Its awesome! You can check it out at www.geocities.com/smh4hc . She even has us linked to model horse 4-H clubs in California and New York as well as the Abaco Horse website and a number of general  model horse clubs and collectors.

Our May meeting is tentatively set for May 18th from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. at the Commissioners Annex. School will be out on May 27th. Parents, I need to know if you still want the meetings after that on the third Wednesday from 1:30 to 3:00 or if you need a different day during the summer. I can do it in the morning if that would work better. Id like to do 2 hour meetings in June and July to be sure record books and everything is ready before Fair. Remember, record books are to be turned in to me one week before Fair so they can be judged and ready to go by Fair. This helps take the pressure off the judging committee if we can do this ahead of time and it's one less thing you have to deal with right before Fair. Members are also encouraged to do a scene for our club display at Fair. The scenes will be judged.

Please call me if you cant attend any of these events, my phone number is 756-3182.
